too low to have gotten her into her schools without affirmative action. When she or anyone else points out her high achievement after she was in those schools, they attribute it to "Ivy League grade inflation."

Perhaps these wealthy white men are telling us more than they realize they are telling us. In short, that all you really have to do is be admitted to an Ivy League school and from there on, it's gravy. You don't have to worry about grades, because everyone gets at least a gentleman's C and with just a titch more effort, B's and A's. So the admission itself is the only really hard part.

Tells us a lot about them, doesn't it? Tells us a lot about why they so ferociously guard admissions processes against affirmative action--if they really believe (whether or not it's actually true) that the hardest part of an Ivy League career is getting in, and from then on all the doors of society are open to you.

What they're telling us is that THEY don't really deserve THEIR credentials and accolades...that many of them got in only because they were legacies or their families had the money to pay or had made huge donations to the school...which is why the prospect of being forced to share their position with others not similarly positioned terrifies them. Because--heaven forfend!--some of those "affirmative action babies" might actually be smarter and more deserving than they are. And if they're not...well, all that does is make them feel as if they really are no better than those people they once looked down upon for being poor or black or Hispanic.

It's unbearable to them. Their whole self-image depends on maintaining the status quo...the privileges bestowed on them at birth.
