And wrote Hardball a nasty email about how racist Buchanan is. I told them that every time Pat comes on the screen I change the channel and it was happening often enough I was getting used to watching the alternatives instead of MSNBC. I thought that losing viewers would hit them harder than a simple complaint about their token right wing racist.

You can see that kind of contrast and generational change between me and my dad. My dad has already said that he's what pundits would call an 'angry white voter' (being angry about taxes/liberals spending too much and raising his taxes, social issues aren't important enough to determine his vote, though he is a social conservative), he's over 50. I'm in my low 20's and I'd consider myself what the pundits would call 'college educated wealthy white voter', a group that's moved more and more heavily towards the democrats in the last decade.

The numbers in the last election even show how the GOP is losing their base of white people among the new generation, white voters 30 and under voted for Obama over McCain by a 10 point margin.

I know whenever he is on Chris Matthews I change the channel. Chris lets him blather on unchecked as if he's a valid opinion on political matters. Since he's on that show nearly every night my viewing of Chris Matthews has become very minimal. I kept tuned to MSNBC in spite of him on Rachel's show because I've seen her do the slap-down on him before and hoped for the same. I am amazed that any reputable cable news station features him.

Racial polarization tends to increase during bad economic times. They might actually believe that with a nonwhite President - they have a free hand to use language that has been generally considered off limits since the 60's.

They might actually believe that playing on fears of "the minorities taking over" and the white man becoming a persecuted minority will pay off for them politically.

No doubt there is a market for this demagoguery. I certainly hope and think it is a minority that will accept this nonsense. I am quite certain that the Republicans will lose any inroad they were hoping to build with minority communities. But they may really think that just as they have had some success with the strategy of making themselves the party of God, Guns and Guts, they may genuinely think they can be equally successful with a strategy of presenting themselves as the party of the "downtrodden white man."

Most of them had been sent out of Germany as adolescents by their parents in the 1930s when things started getting ugly in Germany. The British called for volunteers among them and they formed their own German-speaking commando unit that hit Sword Beach on D-Day with the other allies. I wonder if Pat knows about this. I'm not suggesting they weren't white or Caucasian, but knowing Pat's admiration for Uncle Adolph, I wonder if he would approve of 100% Jewish appointees to the USSC or if that idea would kind of get under his skin.
