US Military in Iraq Says 3 Soldiers Killed
Source: AP

BAGHDAD – The U.S. military said Friday that three of its soldiers were killed in an attack on a base outside Iraq's second largest city of Basra, in the south.

In other violence, two Iraqis were killed by a bomb in Baghdad as hundreds of thousands of pilgrims gathered to mark the death of a revered Shiite religious figure. And in Karmah, 80 kilometers (50 miles) west of the capital, the daughter and granddaughter of a police officer died in a bombing at his home.

The security situation in Iraq has improved dramatically in the last two years, though militants still carry out lethal attacks on a regular basis.

"Three Multi-National Division-South Soldiers were killed when Contingency Operating Base Basra was attacked by indirect fire," the military said, referring to a mortar or rocket attack.

1. Very sad. If we're waiting for stability there, the troops will never come home.
But if we're not there to fight, maybe the fighting will lessen... :-(

2. I remember those days of indirect fire so well
and having to make a choice as to stay put or go to the bunker and deal with the coral snakes.

3. This has got to stop. The pull out can't happen fast enough.
Are these attacks coming from terrorists or insurgents? Not that it makes a whole lot of difference at this point, but I wonder if the civil unrest will lift once we leave, or if it will get worse.
