"Sept. 11 families: Keep Guantanamo Bay open"
Edited on Fri Jul-17-09 07:18 AM by armyowalgreens
I had to post this before I go to sleep. It really pisses me off...

http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/07/17/gitmo.families/index.html
GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba (CNN) -- Families of September 11 victims visiting Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, on Thursday urged the Obama administration to drop plans to close the facility and to restart terror trials there.

"I am opposed to the closing of this facility because of political reasons," said Gordon Haberman whose daughter, Andrea, was killed when terrorist planes struck the World Trade Center. "I believe that the current administration spoke too quickly on this."

Haberman said he thinks President Obama should not insist on carrying out his campaign pledge to shutter the detention facility.

Haberman was one of nine people visiting Guantanamo this week who lost loved ones in the September 11 attacks. He and the others had the opportunity to observe pre-trial hearings for some suspects on Wednesday and Thursday.

----------------------------------

The title of this story is completely inaccurate. A mere fraction of the 9/11 families were represented. And the ones that spoke out in support of Gitmo seem to have been missing a lot of late breaking news for the last 7 or 8 months. I don't understand how the fact that they are victims of 9/11 makes them qualified to speak on the legal/ethical nature of Gitmo.

2. "...because of political reasons..."
Oh, okay, I was going to say something respectful about the rule of law and all that, but go fuck yourself.

3. Oh don't worry, we'll still have Bagram AFB where we'll be holding people indefinitely,
Illegally and torturing them as well. We've just got to wait until they complete the expansion project.

4. wait ... this isn't one of those who, according to Ann Coulter, were happy about
their loss, because it gave them money?

6. No, those were the Jersey Girls and none of them seem to be in the article
Mindy Kleinberg, Lorie Van Auken, Patty Casazza (sp?) and Kristen Breitweiser. All four of them have expressed a much more compassionate and liberal stance toward issues such as civil liberties, Guatanomo and US foreign policy and hence that was why the Coultergeist attacked them

5. I don't remember these names. Are these that group of RW families?
They sound like them. Does anyone remember them? In particular, I remember a woman whose brother was one of the pilots. She had a group of families that did exactly that, politicize 9/11.

9. Melissa Long's 2004-era talking point is past its sell-by date:
"Our government's current executive order to halt the military commissions makes us foolish and weak, and invites more attacks," said Melissa Long, whose boyfriend was a first responder killed in New York. "What is fair and just is to continue the military commissions and punish those who have committed acts of terrorism against Americans, period."

she must have been in a coma for the past few years...
