California State University Chancellor Charles B. Reed unveiled a plan Thursday to increase student fees by about 20 percent – asking students to pay nearly $1,000 more for annual tuition this fall compared with last.

Trustees of the Cal State system are expected to vote on the proposal Tuesday as one piece in a larger plan to close a $584 million deficit. Reed's budget plan also calls for reducing enrollment by 40,000 students, furloughing workers two days a month and asking individual campuses to cut courses and programs.

The proposed $672 fee increase comes on top of a $306 fee increase trustees approved in May, when the trustees raised the cost of attending a Cal State school by 10 percent. Adding on the average campus fee of $801, the typical cost for undergraduates this fall would be $4,827.

"I think that's a good bargain, especially if you compare us to other universities in the country," Reed said during a conference call Thursday with reporters. ..........(more)

6. to add: FEE in CA is TUITION anywhere else (only a small % of "fee" goes to non-tuition purposes in
CA).

2. Same is happening in the University of California statewide
They're also accepting more foreign students because they pay a much higher tuition. We're going to get furlough days too, but the number is based on the individual salaries. Those making less than 40,000 get cut 4% and it goes up incrementally as employees get paid more (the Chancellors, Deans, Vice Chancellors and professors are all included). At least for now the plan is for 12 months after which everything is supposed to automatically revert back to pre-furlough levels.

I work at UC Berkeley in administration.

3. estimated costs for a freshman at the university of illinois
tuition and fees--12,660-> 16,978

total cost with dorm,meals,ect-- 25,654-> 29,972

depending on the courses, my community college`s credit hour cost,fees, and books can top 2000 per semester

a "good bargain" is an understatement

4. I think it's a shame education isn't a given today but............

there seems to be some protection for those families earning less than 75K. The over-all costs compared to what my daughter and I paid in the late 90's seems good. What distresses me is the plan to reduce enrollment!

I read the article and I see no mention of why there's any increase. Did I miss something?

It seems to me the American people are all too accepting of increases in insurance, education, & medical costs. We never seem to hear why these costs must increase. We just take it in and try to fiigure out ways to pay! For example, I am tired of paying increased premiums so that insurance companies can buy property and have big buildings or invest to add to their bottom line. They're probably getting tax deductions for the cost of doing business AND the increases they pass on to consumers (double dipping?). Yes, companies, or universities, have to grow but on whose back?

5. Penn State was talking about an almost 10% hike which translates
into an additional $1289 per year (now they are talking about deep cuts to keep it around 4%). There has been a huge battle with Gov. Ed Rendell over stimulus funds intended for higher education. Rendell was trying to withhold funds from Penn State, Temple, Lincoln and the University of Pittsburgh because they are classified as "state-related" rather than part of the states college system.

How many people have an extra $1300 dollars for college this year?
