Sexual complaints in Bellevue school system
1:51

BELLEVUE, OH (WTOL) - Serious sexual harassment allegations against a local superintendent and his right hand man dominated a school board meeting in Bellevue. They are suspended with pay for now, but it could get worse.

The Bellevue City School Board received numerous complaints against Superintendent William "Bud" Martin and Assistant to the Super Darrell Hykes, saying they've created a hostile work environment with their continual racy comments.

News 11 has obtained a copy of the allegations against Martin and Hykes. Before you read further, we want to warn you some of them are disturbing. Now, both men have 10 days to respond.

By law the Bellevue School Board says it addressed allegations against Assistant to the Superintendent Darrell Hykes: things like presenting a "Wet T-shirt" ad to "office staff" and suggesting they attend "as a team." And talking about "various females that (he visits) and sexual activity that (he is) involved with them." Allegations against Superintendent William "Bud" Martin include comments about a meeting saying it "was as much fun as the inside of a prom queen's thighs on prom night" and referring to a female principal as "here is my hottie honey."

snip....

News 11 tracked down Martin's home address and knocked on his door to no response. Hykes was unable to be reached for comment as well. The Board appointed elementary Principal Kim Schubert as Acting Superintendent. She says she's "purely looking at it as an opportunity to lead this school district and to do great things with our teachers."

2. We had a supt like that years ago
One of the couriers delivered some paperwork to his house late one night and our special Ed director answered the door wearing a man's bathrobe.

Just heard a few months ago that supt has AIDS. Not surprised.

7. I won't deny the this "supt" you speak of is an ass for one reason or another...
...but how does your example support that? If he was being lewd and flashing his robe open, you'd have a point. But what's so terrible about answering a door in a bathrobe late at night? I don't like doing answering a door that way, makes me feel a bit uncomfortable, but there have been a few occasions when no one else was around to answer the door to my house, I thought it might be important to get to the door, I wasn't fully dressed, and the best I could do was grab a bathrobe and sprint for the door.

I've typically done that with badly timed package deliveries. It seems most of the delivery people around here are practically walking away from your door the second after they touch your doorbell, as if you're supposed be standing right behind the door waiting for them to ring. If you don't reach the door fast enough to catch them hopping back into their trucks, they'll happily leave you with nothing but a note stuck to your door instead of the package you wanted. They're so impatient that I've been sitting on the sofa 15 feet from the door, fully dressed and ready to go, on my feet as soon as I hear the doorbell ring, and they're already walking away by time I answer the door.

With that kind of ridiculous impatience, if you aren't fully dressed it's a bathrobe or nothing -- delivery guys certainly aren't waiting long enough for you to tie a Windsor knot and straighten your lapels.

11. Nothing wrong with relations between consenting adults.
Just you wish they'd checked out the posters about safe sex if one of them is now HIV positive.

16. Supt was a he. It was his house. He was also married.
Special ed director was a she. She was married. They were not married to each other.

She answered the door at his house wearing a bathrobe.

18. Okay. Got it. :)
A little lapse in careful reading there.

I'm still not one to get overly worked up about what goes on among consenting adults, however.

3. How did he ever even rise in the administrators' hierarchy to be superintendant?
I wonder how old he was. It sounds like something someone in his 80s would still think was okay to do.

6. Assholes are often quite popular - that, and others are fearful of confronting them
...especially if they are well liked "pillars of the community."

That aside, many people will automatically downplay the assholishness of some of these alpha-authoritarian types because they're symbolic of an ideal that is culturally exalted and glorified.

4. Man, Bellvue is one of those Peyton Places we used to drive to when we skipped school.
Like most rural towns in Ohio . . . Village of the Damned-esque creepiness and insularity. It's like being in America 10 years ago . . . rotted victims of rampant corporatism combined with small-town bigotry and leeriness of the unfamiliar. :scared:

19. It's not really. It's a time of great anxiety and stress for most people I think.

We had a boss who was accused of sexual harassment and was asked to go on leave for a week while the HR drones did their due diligence. We all liked him, couldn't believe it, and so offered our well wishes, and it was clear to everyone who called what a terrible, embarrassing, shocking predicament this was for him. He quit. The accuser was eventually let go due to her disruptive, unstable personality. It's always a good thing to err on the side of innocence until proven guilty and apply that wisdom across the board. Even when it's obvious the person(s) involved are guilty of whatever workplace transgression.

12. My high school days are long, long past, but
our high school's principal and superintendents were both ex football coaches. Both thought and acted as if the only thing important at school was sports.

Both were unqualified morons, incapable of leading a school in academic matters.
