Obama picks URI climate change expert as analyst

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—A University of Rhode Island scientist starting a new job at the White House says global climate change is among the most important issues facing the country since it affects national security, the economy and even food supplies.
Kate Moran, associate dean of URI's Graduate School of Oceanography, will start a new two-year job Monday as a senior policy analyst for President Barack Obama's Office of Science and Technology Policy.
Moran's research has focused on climate change, and she says scientists should be more comfortable joining policy debates.
In 2004, Moran led a research team that drilled first-of-its-kind core samples from the Arctic sea floor. It showed the North Pole was once warm -- 74 degrees Fahrenheit -- about 55 million years ago.
