Swine flu sweeping world 'at speed'l
July 18, 2009
Article from: Agence France-Presse
THE World Health Organisation says swine flu has swept the globe at "unprecedented speed", and a study warns that the pandemic could tip the world into deflation and delay the economic recovery.

The WHO said it will stop giving figures on the numbers infected by the A(H1N1) virus to allow countries to channel resources into close monitoring of unexpected developments and patterns in the spread of the disease.

Argentina, meanwhile, issued a nationwide alert after pigs were confirmed to have the swine flu virus, health authorities said.

"We have detected clinical cases of the A(H1N1) influenza in a pig farm in Buenos Aires province, they have been confirmed by laboratory tests," the national farm and food standards agency said.

In Brazil, the number of deaths from swine flu nearly tripled to 11, including the first person shown to have caught the virus spontaneously within the country.

On Thursday, England's chief medical officer Liam Donaldson said that in a worst case scenario, around one in three Britons could be infected and 65,000 could die.

2. Without mutation, we're looking at a virus that's about 3x-15x as deadly as the seasonal flu.
It's not the 1918 Spanish Flu (at least not yet), but it's going to kill a lot of people.

The good news? Its case-fatality ratio seems to be between .1% and .5%...meaning that an individual has an overwhelming chance of living, even if they contract this virus.

3. So that would be between 100,000 and 500,000 fatalities in the US?
If one in three get it (as predicted for the UK) that would be 100,000,000 * 0.001 = 100,000.

This seems consistent with 65,000 deaths predicted in the UK.

5. That's the prediction.
The speed of the spread of this virus justifies the 30% contagion rate, IMO. If that holds true, that would result in roughly 100k-500k U.S. deaths.

Of course, this doesn't factor in the effects of an effective vaccine...nor does it factor in the effects of mutation.

12.  the world samples taken so far respond to the two vaccines available
the united states has to buy the two vaccines from overseas labs.... it`s it grand...no one in the usa makes the vaccines.

a real good job of protecting america is`t it.

13. I think it has much more to do with the vaccine. Vaccines make money.
People scared of the flu virus and that it may become much more deadly, will tend to make more people want the vaccine.. The big push by the drug companies would be to make it mandatory for children to attend school. That would mean big money.
