A lot of us became familiar with him then. He was such a huge booster of science and the space program.

Well, maybe where he is now, up beyond the moon, he can see everything much more clearly. He was indeed "the most trusted man in America." We basically have NO ONE now - of any stripe. (Well, except maybe Keith and Rachel - to a lesser extent.)

I grew up watching Walter. One of my earliest TV memories was Nov. 22, 1963. I've never forgotten his reaction after having to report the death of President Kennedy.
I'll never forget his "WOW!" after Armstrong stepped on the Moon.
He was indeed trusted. And he earned it.
