The era died long ago. Tonight its greatest citizen died, too.
He was the constant in my younger life when the world's biggest - and not so big - events occurred. He made it all the more wonderful or all the more bearable. He wrote about my father' war and contributed to the end of my generation's war.

To this day I watch the CBS Evening News, perhaps hoping against reality that he might again appear. Even the now highly esteemed Dan Rather, was but a pale seat warmer. Couric and Chung were never worthy to even warm the seat. Sumner's Tiffany Network run amok. A trend that continues - and gets worse - to this day. Vacuous newsreaders with uninspired writers and producers, and owned by demons.

But Walter. Walter was, for me, there for it all.

Sputnik

Telstar

Dallas

The Riderless Horse

The Great Society

Buzz and Apollo 13 and Gus screwing the pooch and losing the capsule.

Martin

Bobby

Hanoi and Saigon

Tet

Watergate

White House sweaters

Gas rationing

22% mortgage interest

The National Malaise

Walter made it all somehow, if even for a moment, better than it might have been had I not heard it from him.

Sail on, Uncle Walter. Sail on.
