1. I'm 56 years old
I grew up with CBS News and Walter. Space, Kennedy, riots, Viet Nam, MLK, RFK,1968 DNC, 1972 RNC, Watergate, Sadat..... We've lost a giant. Younger people will never know the profound influence that man had on us as a nation during those times nor will they ever have anyone that will ever approach his integrity. The torch has been passed.....is there anyone willing to carry it? Godspeed Walter.

3. I remember.....
Evening, November 22, 1963, I watched Kennedy's casket arriving at Andrew's AFB with my dad, on a 13" Admiral B&W tv. My dad was crying and said to me "why would anyone want to kill that man?". I was 10 years old and Walter was there. All the space launches I watched, from Alan Shepard to the shuttle, and I watched as many as I could as a kid, Walter was there. The launch of Apollo 11 and the landing, I watched and Walter was there. Watergate.....Walter explained it to us. Viet Nam and the nightly body count...Walter told us. It was a different time, things are different now. A college journalism degree today is a cheap easy way for lazy good looking kids that are too chicken to try their bad acting talents in movies, to get in front of a camera and feel like they're somebody. The funny thing is, he inspired many to enter journalism. Too bad the desire to be an "anchor" of a newscast became an overriding ambition for many of them.

4. My experience exactly...
I'm a year younger, but you described my experience also. If anyone doubts your words about a journalism degree today, they only need to look at Palin for a reality check: she proves your point.

R.I.P. Uncle Walter.

6. So very many memories...
His grief in reporting the death of JFK, his live reports from Vietnam, his unrestrained joy when man walked on the moon, his reporting on Watergate, and so many, many more.
