DU this poll: Were Rep. Todd Tiahrt's comments out of line?
Edited on Sat Jul-18-09 01:40 PM by proud2BlibKansan
The Kansas Democratic Party is demanding an apology from Congressman Todd Tiahrt after comments he made on the House floor Thursday night.

The congressman was debating against public funds that could be made available for low-income, single women in Washington, D.C. to have abortions.

To get his point across, Tiahrt referred to President Barack Obama.

He said, "If you take that scenario and applied it to many of the great minds we have today, who would we have been deprived of? Our president grew up in similar circumstances. If that financial incentive was in place, is it possible that his mother may have taken advantage of it?"

Rep. Tiahrt also made the same comments about Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.

The Kansas Democratic party has started an online petition for an apology.

Tell us what you think. Were Rep. Todd Tiahrt's comments out of line? Take the poll at the right side of the screen.

1. You might get more response if you include his comments.
People aren't always motivated to click on a link with zero info in advance.

5. Thanks, that worked. Only 37.4 % yes for 'comments out of line'. WTH?

8. Check out the comments:
Mr. Tiahart is using an argument that is old. There are many documented "great minds" that this idea of free and easy abortion would have deprived humanity of. The President just happens to be one of them and is a current example. I don't think any offense was intended, only an example given. So you all need to get another subject to be offended by.

I think they are looking for something to complain about. He was stating a hypothetical question. I don't believe there was anything offensive with his comments. cry me a river!

Don't those persons offended by these statements remember why abortion was pushed so hard in the first place? It was to control the black population. If you don't believe it, just google "abortion used to control black population" for thousands of websites on that topic. Congressman Tiarht's comments are not out of line, but the democratic party's push to do away with more of our constitutional freedoms is, and that is very offensive to me.

I am neither pro or anti abortion but I do question using Fed. money to correct a condition that should have been corrected by abstinance. I am glad, however that Tiahrt is standing up to the current Dem. bills that will forever change this great country, and not in a good way!

Mr. Tiahrt simply made a logical observation. He has nothing to apologize about. I don't see why this is offensive. I assume Barack Omama's parents never maried and it does not seem like his conception was a planned pregnancy. So if his mother had an unplanned pregnancy and the obortion option was available, perhaps she would have chosen that over having the baby. So this is a good comment and should not be offensive. The point is that abortion may rob our society of some potential world leaders, inventors, musicians, etc.

7. Out of line? Yes. Apology? No.
Forced public apologies mean nothing, and I'm tired of everyone demanding apologies from everyone else. It doesn't remedy any situation, and you know the offender does not mean it anyway. The only thing they're sorry about is that they have to say they're sorry.

It's childish and less than meaningless.

That is the point, more than the apology.

11. Obama/Thomas 2 African American men
Shame on him, highly offensive he used these 2 black men, and no other races to make his point.
I can't stand Thomas, and come to his defense over this comment.
Isn't this a racist remark because he used 2 blacks as an example?
I'm not a thrower of the race card or sexist card, but I am curious what others think
