A minor suggestion to slightly improve the rec/unrec system.
Edited on Sat Jul-18-09 05:26 PM by Occam Bandage
Make it so that you can unrec a thread you have previously recced, and vice-versa. I've three times so far accidentally given threads the wrong input due to my own imprecise clicking. I would like DU to provide a means of protecting my opinions from my own incompetence at delivering them. Thank you.

1. I was so close to unrecing yet another stupid wreck-unwreck OP
and then I actually read what you had to say and agree completely. It is too easy to accidentally unrec a post you meant to rec and vice versa.

7. Standard UI design: Either make a change undo-able, or require explicit confirmation.

8. It's not a matter of thought, entirely.
Edited on Sat Jul-18-09 05:36 PM by Occam Bandage
I just have a very twitchy trackpad. I have an older laptop that's been through a lot of abuse. It's natural to mouseover and click. Sometimes the cursor jumps a little bit, sometimes I anticipate it jumping, and sure, sometimes it is a matter of thought in that I saw the wordshape "recommend" and clicked it before checking to make sure it wasn't "unrecommend."

I mean, yeah, it would be a solution for me to deliberate upon each link I wish to click, but that would require work on my end. After all, a definition of web usability would be "a large amount of work on the administrator's end to protect incompetent users from having to perform a small amount of work."

9. The positive rating this thread has received is just a symptom of the problem.
Obviously people intended to unrecommend it, but they accidentally recommended it.

10. You would need two recs/unrecs to overcome your misclick
Once to undo your misclick, and once to rec/unrec a thread the way you meant to. They would need to add a variable "click_count", or something similar, to the DU code to keep you within the 3 clicks required to rec and then correct a mis-rec. Plus, they'd probably want to make it a toggle of your previous rec, so you can't, for instance, add 3 recs to a thread.

11. This ... is a good idea.
I can however imagine indecisiveness giving way to spending all day on a single thread. :D
