I hate "unrec" because I hate "rec".
Edited on Sun Jul-19-09 12:42 AM by cherokeeprogressive
The only thing that should take posts to "the Greatest Page" is the number of replies they get, either NEGATIVE or POSITIVE.

That said, I think this argument should be either banned or moved because SKINNER has already said that UNREC will stay and that those who have been identified as abusing it have been warned.

7. You mean other than naming it "The Posts That Have Recieved the Greatest Number of Responses" page?
If the number of responses to a post is comparable to the number of trolls who post at DU, then hey, so be it.

20. Ridiculous and redundant. Want to see the threads with the most posts? Just click on "Replies."
Edited on Sun Jul-19-09 01:44 AM by TahitiNut
You'll see the threads in the forum in the order of the number of replies. 'greatest' number first. Enjoy.

8. One comment...using number of replies to determine greatest means that a few
move to the top and remain there.

10. Replies. Rather than Recs. I'd by that for a dollar.
One can rec a thread without comment just as one can unrec.

You know as well as I do that certain posters get recs just because they are who they are.

9. Who even goes to the greatest page thingy in the first place?
Personally I like to steer away from the hivemind crowd in any discussion board.

I avoid Greatest Threads everywhere.

Sure Rec and Unrec gives everyone a way to feel better about themselves. I like this. I don't like this.

Who cares?

11. I don't go to the "Greatest Page" EVER.
I learned early on that it was the domain of those who post things that guarantee their promotion to same.

14. I guess that would mean that the OP generated replies based on its content.
Say it took ten days to generate enough replies, it generated them when enough people who were concerned about the subject took the time to reply.

17. But the OP itself may be just a flippant comment
that triggers a flippant response, which somebody takes seriously, which starts a real conversation way down in the responses-

Ah hell, who am I kidding. The problem with your idea is that DUers like to complain when they see something they disagree with. The end result would be trollish posts that piss people off being put on the greatest page.

Edited on Sun Jul-19-09 01:10 AM by JI7
some of them are nothing more than the same 2-5 people engaged in a flamewar. and sometimes having nothing to do with what the OP posted.

18. Posts with replies that don't include words in the body of their post shouldn't be included.
I know a few posters whose subject line is the extent of their post.

Some (ONE) of them have/has posted a brazillion times. Their posts though, contain about three paragraphs cumulatively.

19. Is there even a valid reason for a "Greatest" list?
There have been scores of threads arguing about changes to the way an OP gets to the "Greatest" page.

Is is possible that the "Greatest" page has always been a popularity contest and...as a result...most of us don't give two shits what makes it to the Greatest page?

22. How about
not having a greatest page to begin with. Rec and unrec seem to be features to cheerlead an article. Why not let articles just be on the site like any other article, and if you dont like or agree with it, you can ignore it and not post instead of unrec. Same with rec. Why should it be possible to rec threads to put them on top of others when they may just be vanity OP's. Get rid of both features and click on the articles and post that you like and find interesting and similarly ignore and dont post on articles you find of no vaule or disagree with/

23. Maybe Skinner could implement your idea about most replies, but call it the "Greatest Pile"
By the way, we already have something called the REPLIES column, which tells you which threads have the most replies.

"Greatest" and "MOST" are different concepts, FYI.
