1. An era ends in 2012, not the world.
At least that's what the Mayan calender is supposed to be about.

10. That was actually implied in that episode of Bullshit only as a subtle joke...
Penn looks at this year's calendar on the wall and says, "Oh shit! It says here that the world ends on December 31st, 2009!" Teller points to the lower right corner of the calendar. Penn looks in and says, "Oh, well wait... it appears that a SMALL portion of the world still goes on to January of 2010, so we should be ok." Classic. :)

15. And that's what the traditional Maya Daykeepers say
Edited on Sun Jul-19-09 07:50 AM by SpiralHawk
The 'end of the world' bullshit is all outliers trying to make a buck by stirring up fear -- what I have come to recognize as the Republicon Mindset.

Steep Uphill Climb to 2012:
Messages from the Mayan Milieu

"...The Mayan calendars are an object of intense interest for many thousands of people right now, because they focus upon the watershed date of Dec. 21, 2012. Everything changes by then, it is said...

"..."Anthropologists visit the temple sites," Mr. Barrios says, "and read the stelas and inscriptions and make up stories about the Maya, but they do not read the signs correctly. It’s just their imagination. Other people write about prophecy in the name of the Maya. They say that the world will end in December 2012. The Mayan elders are angry with this. The world will not end. It will be transformed. The indigenous have the calendars, and know how to accurately interpret it, not others...

25. Anybody know how linguists finally decoded Mayan hieroglyphs?
After decades of making no progress, some linguist had the bright idea of actually asking one of the descendants of the Mayans what they meant, and he told them.

36. Fighting in Mexico has been going on for centuries---ditto for the rest of the world.
Mexico is not special in this.

I'm the descendant of slaves (and a good number of Whites and any other race that took their fancy) added to that I'm from Haiti. I'm doing just fine and my family in Haiti, is doing the same surprisingly enough. We descendants of ancient people are survivors---fighting will go on for our independence. Every day I walk out the door I'm fighting bigotry, racism, and marginalization over the colour of my skin, my sex, my ethnicity, my religion and so on. I'm doing just fine.

9. LOL.. good 1 as always billyoc, you make me smile!
'no one knows the hour or the day', somewhere in the bible.

I like it that way... and like we'll be around! I kinda doubt it.

as my friend who's a very caring former Nam Vet living in Colorado always says, 'getting tired and preparing for my dirt nap', it's morbid, but he makes me laugh when he says it.

29. No no no! More like, "Enjoy the special effects!" The best part
of The Day After Tomorrow was watching all the fun special effects.

I'd rather keep my fear grounded in stuff like clean water shortages, pollution, overpopulation concerns, etc.

23. No, the Mayan odometer rolls over in 2012
It's not any more of "the end of the world" than the year 2000 or the "dawning of the Age of Aquarius" were.

That said, the prophecies of Malachi say there will only be one more Pope...

26. 2012 marks the beginning of the end. I'm betting on the Zoroastrian apocalypse.
A comet/asteroid hits the earth ending all life. Ahura Mazda (Wise Lord/God) holds the final judgment and then reorders the universe/galaxy. That should happen about 2036. At that time an asteroid will pass so close to the earth. It will actually pass under our satellites. Which are held there by our gravity. If the asteroids velocity exceeds the inertia exerted by our gravitational field. It will be a near miss. This time. If it doesn't catch a gravitational whip from another planet to restore the lost velocity. It will most likely get caught up in our gravitational field on it's next pass and hit us. Thousands of years in the future. If the velocity of the asteroid doesn't exceed the inertia. Well there's no where to run to and no where to hide.

31. Isn't the exact date 5/5/2012? In any case, I think it will probably be
something of significance happening at that time, although not necessarily a cataclysm. It is amazing how these so-called 'primitive people' had such accurate astronomical information, isn't it?
