You want reform? I'll give you reform!
Rule 1: No entity may own or govern more than one hospital

Rule 2: Insurance companies may not set prices or have contracts with hospitals

Rule 3: All doctors do business on a competitive basis

Rule 4: Any collusion in pricing betwen doctors gets their license pulled permanently

Rule 5: Only the U.S. government can sell physician liability insurance. Prices are set to cover liability up to 1 mil. dollars max

Rule 6: Everyone pays according to total income + net worth

Rule 7: All patents on pharmaceutical products are revoked and meds are priced according to market demand

Rule 8: The U.S. gov't establishes funded research facilities and is the sole owner of all rights to products that must be priced
according to their actual cost to produce.

Rule 9: Any physician convicted of fraud or malicious behavior gets lilcense pulled permanently

Rule 10: Government employees pay the same as everyone else.

1. The goals you wish to achieve with those programs are different then the profit motive goals.
Which may be the whole point.


But I agree, it is not as complicated as people think it is, and it is what people think is important.

For instance, in the Chicago burbs we have Advocate Lutheran General with a main hospital building but you can't swing a dead cat without hitting an Advocate clinic, rehab center, doctors' office building, physical therapy , cancer specialty, geriatric specialty, immediate care, etc. Ditto for Alexian Brothers Hospital.
I guess maybe I'm asking, what defines a 'hospital' these days?

PS: Your ideas in general have a lot of merit.
