How we can all save effort.
Edited on Sun Jul-19-09 07:38 PM by Boojatta
I propose a neutrality button. If you're neutral about a thread, then you have an opportunity to indicate your neutrality. You would still retain the option of recommending a thread that you approve of. However, if you neglect to indicate either neutrality or approval, then a thread is automatically unrecommended.

Voila! No need for an un-rec feature. If you indicate neither neutrality nor approval, then a thread is automatically unrecommended.

5. If the idea were implemented, then you wouldn't need to unrecommend this thread!

8. Yeah, and that would be a shame.
The ability to unrecommend a thread gives me and other posters the opportunity to register our feelings about a thread without having to stop and chat with the thread poster about why. Just as Recommending a thread means something, so does Unrecommending one.

3. Another Un-Rec
If I choose to say nothing, that doesn't mean I don't like it.

6. I've got a better idea: how about if you feel neutral about a topic . . .
Nothing happens?

I mean, if you feel neutral about something, then your non-opinion should have zero weight.

Do you really think readers should be required to click neutral on every post they don't care about to avoid having it drop out of sight? In most cases, neutrality is because the topic doesn't trigger interest, not what's said about the topic.

I don't especially care about rec or unrec (it's just not relevant to the way I use this site), but a neutrality flag sounds like a seriously suboptimal idea.
