What should be our reaction, as a nation, if our captured soldier is tortured?
Should we offer to negotiate with the Taliban? Should we bomb the shit out of them? Or should we just pull up our shit and get the hell out of their country and leave them to their own devices, good or evil? What should we do?

1. What they did with Rohde is keep it out of the media, as it was felt that Pearl was killed in part
due to all of the media attention. I suspect that's why this has been relatively quiet (and needs to stay that way).

13. We all should be.
Perhaps it is a time for diplomacy? Our leaders might want to suggest to the Taliban that they will only make it more difficult for themselves if he is seriously injured. Perhaps it is time to pay them off like we did the Sunni in Anwar? Negotiate with, like we did with the Sunnis, and pay them not to kill Americans. Did that not work in Iraq?

19. They are religious nutzoids.
They have no respect for women at all. Even after their Mother brought them into world and gave them life. Still they do not even appreciate their own Mothers.

6. We should start by making sure cheney can never go outside without seeing/hearing our howls at him
Then, we should get serious about prosecuting war criminals, from the top first.

17. We should be horrified,
just as we were when we found out that we torture prisoners, too.

But this kid is already thrown to the wolves. Why shouldn't the Taliban hold him and demand a full withdrawal by the US?

That's what I'd do.

We need to get the hell out of the Middle East IMMEDIATELY..........................................

21. We should not be surprised.

I'm a believer in negotiation, but I don't know if that's possible. Given the past eight years, there is no reason for anyone in the Middle East to be gracious to a captive.

on edit -- Unless they just want to "show us up." How would that make the United States look if they were very kind to the soldier and didn't hurt him at all? What if they converted him? ...

It's just a fantasy, I know. And even if he did convert, over here it would be called brainwashing.

This young man is in my thoughts, and I worry for him. He's younger than my youngest child, just a baby, really, and I'm sure he's terrified. He's based out of Ft. Rich -- I always feel a special connection with our local soldiers.

23. We should be outraged.
Following our outrage, we should indict Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and every other member of that adminstration that was involved, try them in a court of law, and, if convicted, sentence them to the harshest penalty allowed by law.

If anyone died under torture US Law mandates the death penalty.

26. He won't be tortured.
He'll be "aggressively interrogated", with "enhanced interrogation techniques". After all, the Taliban has a "ticking time bomb" scenario going on... they need to know the next raids by US/NATO troops to they can protect their people!

After all, they can't be soft with US soldiers... Taliban fighters' lives are on the line!

He may even have to "extraordinarily rendered".

complain that our soldier is being tortured after they condoned torture (enhanced interrogation techniques - as they call them) when we did it. We all know that is what they are going to do. They will be outraged at the Taliban doing to ours what we did to theirs.
