American Voters, the GOP has no empathy... for you |
|
I am astounded to hear empathy being turned into a bad word by the rethugs. But if they want to play that game, it's time to turn it against them.
All national politicians are have's, they are all "elites". The difference between the parties comes down to one word: Empathy.
The GOP, by its own admission, sees empathy as a liability to be rejected. Thus, they are unable to imagine what it's like to not be wealthy, privileged, and in possession of quality health care. They can't imagine living paycheck to paycheck, working with one's hands, worrying about how to pay for one's house, children and medical bills on the meagerest of wages. They cannot imagine not being wined and dined by insurance lobbyists, Wall Street lobbyists and lobbyists of every other stripe.
They can't imagine defining the "economy", not by how well their stock portfolios do, but by whether they have a job, a place to live, and food on the table.
They do not represent us, the American people, because they are emotionally incapable of placing themselves in our shoes.

I have always thought that it should be a requirement of any elected official to have to spend one year living the life of the Average American before they could hold office. What better way to be prepared to represent our true interests than to take a crash course in the majority of Americans reality. Maybe we should title it The American Empathy Project.
