2. We obviously watch different programming |
|
I have seen almost non-stop reporting on the passing of Walter Cronkite the last couple of days by the news channels. I don't know if it was just a coincidence that every time I tuned in that the Cronkite story was up or not, but it sure has seemed to be that way. As I am writing this, I am watching a segment on MTP about this very subject! Of course, no amount of coverage can properly pay tribute to such an American icon, but I see no lack of coverage, for sure. Just my opinion.

3. Thank you Mike Malloy for your tribute. |
|
On Fri night the news had just been announced when Mike Malloy went on the air. He devoted the entire 3 hr show to reminiscences, stories and observations about Cronkite. Malloy has had a long career in journalism, both print and radio and TV. He recognized what an enormous giant Walter Cronkite was.

6. Walter was spinning in his coffin over the obsession |
|
I watch broadcast TV so I don't get the cable sNews services. Saturday morning both CBS and NBC had all Cronkite all the time. They only broke from it to give the weather. I have no problem with them running a special but there is other news and they obsessed over this one story like they did about Jackson, Holliway and the other dead white girls.
It's like they look for anything to give them an excuse from airing the real news.

He just covered some of the most important events of the 20th century. And he ended a war, but hell, you can't make a music video of that.

|
I think CBS did a classy job on their salute to Uncle Walter. They had people who worked with him, friend and those who know him...not bubblehead wannabe game show hosts who are clueless but babble on anyway.
I'm glad they're not running non-stop Walter. It says more about how the corporate media wastes time on Jacko or prostrated themselves over Timmeh. In both cases, the set when click.
We now return you to your normally scheduled corporate propaganda...

I'm 40 and I remember him REALLY WELL. I watch CBS news from 5 to 13 or so almost every night, so I got a few years of him, remember his retirement and am still bitter at CBS for the way they treated him. He was supposed to use these years to do specials for CBS, but Dan rather really wanted him GONE once he was out the door.

26. Well, Do You Remember Tim Russert? |
|
Do you remember the seemingly endless tributes and canonization efforts for him? All you need to know about Walter Cronkite is that he's entitled to double that amount of public respect, bare minimum. And I think Russert would agree with me....

|
That was the Anchorman/Ron Burgundy era of news. I was 11. Did I watch the news? Sometimes, but the national news was during supper. My folks did watch CBS, with the local anchors being Bill Kurtis (again, Anchorman) and Walter Jacobsen.
Did Cronkite do independent reporting? Or was he a guy who just read the news?

Most people I know were like, "I thought he was already dead..."
And most of the younger generation don't even care a wit about WC. I'm 32 and only know him from a few famous tv clips.

So, because you and your peer age group thought he was already dead, there is no significance in his passing.
I weep for the future.
