Black officers want immediate ban on domelights.com website
Black officers want immediate ban on domelights.com website

By Troy Graham

Inquirer Staff Writer

Lawyers for a black police officer's organization plan to ask a federal judge for an immediate injuction banning all Philadelphia officers from using the website domelights.com while at work.

The Guardian Civic League sued the Police Department, the website and its founder last week in federal court, charging the site contains hostile, racist material.

The league has called a news conference for this afternoon to discuss plans to ask U.S. District Court Judge Cynthia Rufe for an expedited hearing.

The league said that white officers post to the website and moderate it while on duty using department computers, creating a hostile work environment for black officers.

1. many/most workplaces restrict any personal computer use during work hours
no reason why public entities should be any different. We're not paying them to surf the web.

2. I guess you gotta do what you can...
but it's not like it's gonna stop bigots from being bigots during working hours.

Do what you can, I suppose.

3. I gotta ask - why so many laptops in a squad car?
Last night I went to my local quick shop for a diet coke. I parked beside a city police car. I noticed that he had three laptops open and running - one balanced on his right knee and two in the seat beside him. Why do they need all of them? Also, he was texting on his cell phone. He could not have responded quickly to a call or a situation in the vicinity if his life depended on it.

4. I agree with these guys completely.

If some guys I worked with posted and moderated a site rife with derogatory, anti-women comments, I would be disgusted and it would affect the way I performed with co-workers. It does create a hostile work environment and shouldn't be tolerated.

5. They are asking for much more that just that...but the block at work is reasonable
though any well enforced Appropriate Use policy would block DU as well.
