Professions 'reserved for rich'
Top professions such as medicine and law are increasingly being closed off to all but the most affluent families, a report into social mobility will say.

Former minister Alan Milburn is to report to the prime minister on how to widen access to high-status jobs.

He says young people in England should have access to much better careers advice to boost their ambitions.

<snip>

He said the professions had a "closed shop mentality" and "have become more and not less exclusive over time".

1. The governnment has made it increasingly more difficult for people who are not well-off to afford
long-term training.

There has always been snobbery and 'closed-shop mentality' in the professions; but I don't think this is the whole story; sounds like the government getting itself off the hook.
