Stewart SMACKS Brian Williams: "How does it feel, to fall so short?"
Edited on Tue Jul-21-09 05:17 PM by kpete
Smackdown!

The unctuous Brian Williams tells Jon Stewart how much he looked up to Walter Cronkite - "He was a man I wanted to be" - and Stewart responds: "How does it feel, to fall so short?"

Stewart then asks, "Do you think Walter Cronkite would be happy with what he sees in the news now?" Williams says yes, except for ... well, a lot of stuff that Cronkite didn't like about today's news biz.

And really, that's what it's all about, isn't it? All these media types and politicians paying tribute to a man who would absolutely horrify them if he were still alive - and still practicing journalism.

1. Oh, shit! No he didn't!

That reminds me of how Jake Tapper said he looked up to Peter Jennings. Tapper wouldn't be qualified to lick Jennings' boots.

2. Jon Stewart: Kicking ass and taking names since 1962
Brian Williams isn't fit to carry Walter Cronkite's notebook and pen, let alone aspire to his memory.

We were lucky to have him as long as we did. Long live Ms. Thomas, Ms. Ellerbee, and so many others who put facts and reporting them ahead of personality and celebrity.

3. This was totally in good fun between two friends

If I want bullshit spin on reality I'll go to freerepublic or foxnews.

I don't give a shit whether you like Brian Williams or not, but don't try to make it look as if Jon Stewart gave him a smackdown in any sense other than two friends joshing each other.

6. They were joking, but there was an edge to it. Also, the first segment was no joke.

Well, it was (it's the Daily Show) but it was also a genuine call out of the media for their sucking up to Sanford.

9. yeah...I watched it, and it made me sad that Stewart was such a buddy to the Limbaugh fan.
from the Daily Howler:

Williams gushed to Brian Lamb about his great respect for Limbaugh. Boo hoo hoo hoo hoo hoo hoo! Oh, how the followers of this great man have been disrespected, he said:
WILLIAMS (12/26/04): I do listen to Rush. I listen to it from a radio in my office, or depending on my day, if I'm in the car, I will listen to Rush. And he will tell you I've been listening for years. I think it's my duty to listen to Rush. I think Rush has actually yet to get the credit he is due, because his audience for so many years felt they were in the wilderness of this country. No one was talking to them.

<...>

Rush said to millions of Americans, “You have a home. Come with me. For three hours a day you can listen and hear the like-minded calling in from across the country, and I'll read to you things perhaps you didn't see that are out there.” I think Rush gave birth to the Fox News Channel. I think Rush helped to give birth to a movement. I think he played his part in the Contract with America. So I hope he gets his due as a broadcaster.

5. I'm glad you posted this! That was one of the best Daily Shows ever.
Two media call outs and Lewis Black on Republican idiocy.
