Just a reminder with a local plea: All Food Banks Need Donations
Please remember to donate to your local food bank. If everyone picked up just a can or two every trip to the store, it would go a long way.

Our local Second Harvest Food Bank of North West North Carolina is in DIRE need of donations. The shelves are literally bare.

Food Bank Experiencing Worst Shortage Ever

<snip> A year ago, only one in 14 families relied on food from the Second Harvest Food Bank. That number has doubled to one in seven -- an increase that has food bank leaders saying the organization is experiencing its worst food shortage ever.
"I have never seen the food supply as low as it is," said Second Harvest spokesman Clyde Fitzgerald. "Demand for food assistance has been up a consistent 75 percent, and it has been month after month after month versus last year." Second Harvest gets its supplies from donations and from government funding.

With the state budget tied up in the North Carolina legislature, the organization said it isn't getting the state funding it expects each summer. The fact that donations are less anyway during the summer coupled with the presence of a recession that is exacerbating the problem, and you have the worst shortage in the history of the organization, leaders say. <snip>

1. Our local food closet is running low on both donations of food
and money. Plus we have served as many people by July of this year as we did all of last year. Some excellent food products to donate would be macaroni and cheese, spaghetti noodles and sauce, canned vegetables, canned meat and fish products, canned beef stew, canned and boxed soups, cereal, oatmeal. We have gotten donations of odd things that people just don't want, like lemon curd, or gluten free pancake mix. Most people in need don't need or want that stuff. This week we actually got in three carts full of old bread products from Food Lion. The sad thing is that the bread was mostly 7-10 days old already, so that meant that even Food Lion is having a difficult time selling their products.

7. rec.
wait until food pantries start to really run out. That is when people will start to get very angry. Until then it's still bread and circuses. I have been saying it's not bad enough out there for people. I though even the huge increase in homelessness would start to get people angry. You can't live without food.
