My dear friend, a mother with a chronically ill child wants universal health care |
|
She is from Denmark and is a theoretical nuclear physicist, who just happened to give birth to a Downs' Syndrome son that had just about everything which could possibly go wrong (malformed heart, cleft lip/palette, hearing and eye problems, etc.). I asked her in an email to explain to me briefly why she was for universal healthcare (email by permission):
"I move among (and am one of) the middle class community that lives with the chronically ill and either wrestle with the third payer system or find that it doesn't pay. I see those who fall between the cracks of a system designed for the healthy.
A health insurance system that is tied to the fact of having a job CANNOT serve those who get so ill that they cannot work to keep their insurance. That alone is a weak point in the chain.
Whether Obama's proposals can solve this is another issue, but I have lived under a universal health care system before, in Denmark... frankly it was better than what I have lived under for 23 years in the US. I am tired of the disaster we have in America today, and happy to let him have a go at it. Why not? "
