Attention Grammar Nazis!
I found a site you might like:

http://www.apostropheabuse.com

Looks like a lot of people think that ALL words with an S on the end must be plural, and must need an apostrophe.

:banghead:

Funny that one company put apostrophes in "bikinis" and "thongs", but not in "premises" and "coolers".

2. I Have to Say
the grammar police have gotten very, very specific when apostrophe abuse has its own domain name.

That site is pretty amusing -- it's like Engrish.com for the US!

3. Their just a bunch of looser's!
I recently read World War Z by Max Brooks, and was annoyed to find a number of inappropriate apostrophes (as well as some spelling errors). I know it's not great literature, but how could a reputable publisher let this through?

Currently, the top three examples on the site are:

2 PAPA BURGER'S
AS SEEN IN THE NEW YOURK TIME'S
Lemon's, tangerine's, kiwi's

What letters are missing from those words?

i have 2 Spell check programs, 2 Thesauri programs in the computers i built, i own at least 8 dictionaries, 4 thesauri, an electronic spell/thesaurus check pocket device.. i was tested 164 IQ but only Functionally literate.

i really dislike the Spelling Nazis, they are just OCD/Narcissistic/control freaks. just Bullys. at 60 i have worse problems.

dismay. I have no idea where this error is coming from, actually. What on earth are these people trying to do? Between this error and the lose/loose error, I find myself grinding my teeth daily. Lose/loose! They sound totally different! How can they possibly be mixed up???

17. Phonetic spelling. Could of sounds like could've. Would have/would of
Should've/should of.

Then we have shoulda, coulda and woulda to make things REALLY interesting.

For obvious reasons, I've completely ignored using apostrophes of any kind.

Your title could use a comma between 'attention' and 'grammar.'

j/k

Good site. The apostrophe is utterly superfluous in those cases.

"famous for it's cut tie collection"

being a possessive pronoun, 'its' doesn't require an apostrophe- but if it were a proper noun, like a name- it would. so to me, the mistake doesn't seem as ridiculous on its face as some of the other ones.

31. but at least it's on the right track- and it's sort of an exception to a rule, re: posessives...
so people who do it are almost half-right, and at least have their minds in the right place, as opposed to those who apostrophize a plural.

43. But "it" is a pronoun
In English, pronouns don't take an apostrophe in the possessive:

This book is hers
That table is ours
The red car is theirs

So, yes, there's an exception: pronouns and nouns are treated differently. But how often do you see someone write "her's"? It happens, but I think it's a lot rarer than "it's".

44. most other pronouns don't always add an "s" to show possesion, either-
usually only when they're at the end of a sentence, as in your examples.

that's her glass,
that's his glass,
that's their glass,
that's our glass,
that's its glass.

which is probably why it's more common.
