Affair case shakes up Tennessee Senate- another 'family values' republican

State Sen. Paul Stanley on Wednesday resigned as chairman of the powerful Senate Commerce Committee after revelations that he was the target of a reported extortion plot that threatened to reveal an affair with his 22-year-old legislative intern.

The Germantown Republican wrote in a letter to Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey that his decision comes "in light of recent events," but that he will remain in the Senate.

Nashville prosecutors have charged Joel Watts, 27, with trying to extort $10,000 from Stanley by threatening to reveal the lawmaker's relationship with McKensie Morrison.

Stanley contacted the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, which arranged for him to record an April meeting with Watts to exchange the money for a disc of explicit photos.
