Unrest in Disneyland
by Dollars and Sense

From the Orange County Register:

800 demonstrators march on Disney over labor dispute

July 14th, 2009, 6:02 pm
posted by Adam Townsend, Staff Writer

Roughly 800 Disney hotel workers, union organizers, outside demonstrators and members of the Episcopal clergy marched from the Convention Center, shutting down Harbor Boulevard to the Disneyland entrance Tuesday afternoon – another protest rally in the labor dispute between Disney and workers at the three Disneyland hotels that has simmered at a stalemate for a year and a half.

Since the old contract expired Feb. 1, 2008, negotiations have stalled over healthcare issues, and the Orange County branch of the Unite Here hotel union representing the workers has fortified itself for a strike by merging with the Los Angeles chapter – that branch has a strike fund to pull money from if workers vote to stop work and picket the self-described "happiest place on Earth."

2. Looks like I'm not going to Disneyland for a while.
This sucks, because I do love Disneyland.

Not enough to cross a picket line though.

4. I've talked to a few people who worked various positions at Disney
they all said that Disney treats it's employees like dogs.

And they charge huge prices for mediocre food, too.

7. Yeah, my son worked, first at D-land, then at Cali Adventure..
..part-time, while he was a student at Cal Poly Pomona.. it was a tough gig, as most low-paying jobs for kids are.. they used to work him nearly full-time through the summer months.. long hours, not enough breaks, working one of those snack carts out in the heat of a Cali summer.. the poor kid used to come home literally toasted..

I remember during the Christmas holiday season, my son and his fellow Disney slaves used to make jokes about hanging themselves from the wreaths hung down the center of Main Street just to get out of their shifts early.. black humor, I know.. but pretty funny..

5. Disney is well known for being parsimonious with its employees.
They send out flyers to colleges in the winter and spring, soliciting music students to work as entertainment during the summer in Florida and California. The kids work long hours for minimum wage. This allows Disney to circumvent hiring any professional musician from a local.

When anti-war protesters took over the Chicken of The Sea pirate ship and put up a 'Free Mickey Mouse' banner. Yippees were later roused but had to be chase down from the rigging !
