(Blue Dog)Shuler Staying at DC Spiritual Retreat(C Street)?
Source: Asheville Citizen-Times

U.S. Rep. Heath Shuler, who publicly thanked his “Lord and savior, Jesus Christ,” upon winning his first election, has never hidden his Christian devotion.

But he is remaining mum about whether he lives in “C Street,” a stately Washington home that serves as sort of a spiritual retreat for several congressmen.
The Washington Post also notes that the home “pulsed with backstage intrigue” during recent scandals involving South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford and U.S. Sen. John Ensign of Nevada.

The brick home is home to several members of Congress who hold frequent Bible studies and counsel one another.

“Sorry about this one, but because of privacy issues, we're not giving out any information about the congressman's living arrangements,” Shuler spokesman Doug Abrahms said via e-mail when asked whether the congressman lived at C Street.

Worldmag.com, a Christian magazine, listed Shuler, D-Waynesville, as a “current resident” of the house, along with Sens. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., and Tom Coburn, R-Okla., and Reps. Zach Wamp, R-Tenn., Mike Doyle, D-Pa., and Bart Stupak, D-Mich.

The Washington Post recently ran a long story about the house, at 133 C St. SE, two blocks from the Capitol. That story did not list Shuler as a resident.

The article stated: “At least five congressmen live there, quietly renting upstairs rooms from an organization affiliated with ‘The Fellowship,' the obsessively secretive Arlington spiritual group that organizes the National Day of Prayer breakfast, an event routinely attended by legions of top government officials.”

1. So don't give out details... just confirm that it's not C-Street.
How hard is that?

2. I called his local office just now.
I live in his district. I asked if he lived at C street and was a member of The Family. His staffer said the don't give out details. I said, well you could easily deny it if he doesn't stay there. She said, "Or I could say we don't give out details.." I said, it doesn't look good, and is going to cause him trouble until he puts it to rest.

He's going to get trouble for this.

6. She sounded like they have gotten several calls.
Honestly, I wouldn't care if we had to suffer through a term with a repuke to get a real Dem in 2012.

What an idiot. :eyes:

26. Hi Neighbor
I just spoke to Erica Griffith in the Asheville office. She's very testy. Make it easy for her, ask if he's a member of The Family. He has all other organizations listed on his website.

If I had a few more years, a known name and funding, I'd challenge him, just to expose him.

get an investigative team from "The Enquirer" on this. If there is anything to be found, they'll find it. And, it WILL be a thoroughly vetted article with all the 'i's dotted and 't's crossed.

25. Shuler personally recruited by Rahm
". Heath Shuler, a former Washington Redskins quarterback, recalled to Bendavid how Emanuel recruited him to run for Congress in 2006. Shuler told Emanuel that he was worried that he would have to sacrifice family time as a congressman. "The next day," Shuler says, "Rahm calls and said, 'Hey, I just wanted to call you and tell you I'm taking my kids to school. I'll call you later.' … Then he calls me back three hours later and said, 'Hey, I just wanted you to know I stopped by my daughter's school. I'm going to lunch with her.' That was it. No conversation. He calls me a few hours later, 'I want to let you know I'm picking my kids up. I'm taking them to swim class'." This went on for two or three weeks—calls from dance recitals, swim classes, with the sounds of kids happily playing in the background—until Shuler agreed to run for Congress (he won)."

Edited on Thu Jul-23-09 01:36 PM by Mudoria
Why it is so hard to understand the district is conservative? The only way to win for a Dem in that district is to be almost as conservative as a Repub. Shuler at least votes with the Dems the majority of the time, the opposite will be true with someone like Taylor.

34. I'm scratching my head why my liberal congressman lives at C Street
In this piece from the Washington Post, we learn that our own member of the House, Congressman Mike Doyle, resides in the C Street residence:

People familiar with the house say the downstairs is generally used for meals and prayer meetings. Volunteers help facilitate prayer meetings, they said. Residents include Reps. Mike Doyle (D-Pa.), Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) and Zach Wamp (R-Tenn.), Ensign and Coburn. None of the congressmen agreed to be interviewed for this article. But associates of some of Ensign's housemates privately worried that the other residents would be tarred by the scandals.

So I wondered how connected was my Congressman to the group? Contacted for a comment (specifically asking if the Congressman was a member of The Family and how closely he subscribes to the theology of Doug Coe, if at all. I also asked about the amount he pays for rent - $600/month - a question Fester over at NewsHoggers raised a few days ago) Doyle responded:
The only religious organization I’m a member of is the Roman Catholic Church, of which I’ve been a member all my life. The only religious teachings I follow are those of the Roman Catholic Church.

My living arrangements comply with all House rules and are perfectly legal and ethical. I rent a room – not an apartment – and the rent I pay falls within the range of what anyone could rent a room for on Capitol Hill.

I’m confident the people I represent will judge me on my behavior and my performance as a Member of Congress – not anyone else’s.
Someone's religious identity is extremely personal and indeed should be respected. We live in a secular society - no religious tests for membership in the Congress or in Government. Just because he lives there does not mean he believes all the stuff Sharlet reports.
