"Scientists in Japan are reporting the first scientific evidence that inhaling certain fragrances alter gene activity and blood chemistry in ways that can reduce stress levels. Their study appears in ACS' Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, a bi-weekly publication."
looks like inhaling linalool, "a naturally-occurring terpene alcohol chemical found in many flowers and spice plants with many commercial applications, the majority of which are based on its pleasant scent (floral, with a touch of spiciness)" (wiki,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linalool ) reduced "the activity of more than 100 genes that go into overdrive in stressful situations" in laboratory rats.
well some day i get the same soothing effect sending to hell my boss and inhaling deeply a good cigar, but i think it works quite differently and no linalool is active in the process there. ;)
