UnF***ingbelievable: Harry Reid Delays HCR Vote FOR THE GOP!!
I am so pissed right now...
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said today that the Senate
would not attempt to pass sweeping health care reform until after returning from the August recess.

****

Reid said the Senate would try to complete a package in the fall.

****

Reid said Republicans, who have shown intense resistance to President Obama’s push for health care reform, had asked for more time to work
out a package.

"We will do what we can to make sure their concerns are not buried," Reid said.

...But I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

All I can say is that he better be right that Senate Finance is going to be done with their markup.

If they aren't, I think Chuck Schumer should be Majority Leader. End of story.

So he is just doing as his supporters demand.

His election campaign has more "Republicans for Reid" support groups than it does Democrats.

is to make sure the "reformers" are just as fucked as the rest of us. I bet you take away that high end health care I am paying for for all the elected officials and they'll have a single payer plan tomorrow.

And, since he is willing to wait until the Rethugs decide to say NO to the entire process, let them go without any health issurance period.

13. There Wasn't Going To Be A Senate Vote Til Then Anyway
It amazes me how many here either never took a civics class or are clueless on how the government works. Maybe a big reason was for the past 8 years, we had an out of control executive that ran on fiat and signing statements and people assume that all President Obama has to do is wave his hand and things become law.

The bill has to clear the House first...which many expect will happen before the break in two weeks. Then the bill goes to a House/Senate committee where it's going to be kicked around. It's not until it passes through reconciliation that a version will go to the Senate...and even then that's not the end of the game...if the Senate comes up with a different bill than the House, it's back to reconciliation until a final agreement is reached. This won't happen til October at the earliest and where President Obama's weight will be most felt.

Reid has said that he doesn't have the 60 votes right now...and that's his fault? Letting this matter go until September allows President Obama to get the bill passed with 50 not 60 votes...and makes it a lot easier for a public option to move through.

This "delay" should be a rallying cry for all of us who want real reform...public option. Get the politicians away from the beltway bullshit and lobbyists. Everyone should find time to go to a town hall or get in the face of their Congresscritters and Senators...let them see how many really do want a meaningful bill to pass and our votes and donations mean more than the the insurance company's money.

There's still lots of work to do...and our chance to weigh in is during this upcoming break.

32. It's Senate-speak. The Majority leader rarely...
calls the opposition a bunch of useless, ignorant, hypocritical scumbags whose only purpose is to get in the way. Even if that's what they are.

Besides, the Republicans and bluedogs keep bringing up that cost thing, which hasn't been properly addressed yet. It would be very convenient if they didn't bring it up, but someone had to.

49. They're Looking For Their Payoffs
Politics is very much the "art" of seduction...the President is trying to sweet talk and cajole as many early votes as he can get. The holders on are looking for the "what's in it for me"...a deal, a special project in their district, guarantees to campaign or funnel cash his/her way. A lot of the dealing is done under the table and part of the game that hasn't been played yet.

Yep...there are those who are talking about the costs but their vote has a price. They're not saying yes, but they also haven't said no. They are lookin' for some "sweet nothins" whispered at them. It's amazing how a congresscritters objections to spending big money melts away when some of that grease goes their way. President Obama knows this and why he has former House and Senate members on his staff and in his close circle.

39. It's All A Spin Game...
There are still those who are sitting on the fence and will continue to hold out...looking for a perk or deal to finally commit. If President Obama came off sounding like this is a done deal he'd lose any and all momentum he's been developing. By making it sound bipartisan and close...every vote counts...it gives him more leverage to yank votes over; stroking those who he'll need. It's a strategy many others have used...LBJ was the master at this. Yes, it's definitely playing chess. Almost 3D Chinese checkers.

Cheers...

right, though, that this gives us the recess to pound on our Reps and Senators and let them know what we want.

I'm lucky, with two Senators and a Congressman who seem to be on board, but there are plenty of whiners out there complaining about Reid who should be complaining to their own representatives.

One might ask then, what are you doing here if we're so clueless.

I still think Reid is gutless and spineless. We'll see how the final version looks when it's done...IF it ever gets done.

53. I agree with everything you said until the 60 votes part
You remember your schoolhouse rock show and thank you for reminding all of us because many of us do need the reminder about how a bill becomes a law. However, if Reid doesn't have 60 votes for anything and everything the Democratic agenda calls for then we need a new Senate Majority Leader. Plain and simple. I've never forgiven either him or Pelosi for their part in allowing Bush to destroy this nation, but at least Pelosi is doing her part as Speaker to keep our party in line these days. Reid is not. Reid needs to go.

putting off treatment due to no health coverage or being under-insured, that comes to 1500 dying in August.

"Try" is a another word for failure, so if they don't complete health coverage reform by the fall, that will be another 4500-7500 Americans depending on the Senate's next recess.

I imagine Reid will then say it's 2010; an election year wait until after November.

The reason for that will be to enable the Republicans back to power in order to stifle health care reform for the American People, this will give his Democratic controlled Senate a stronger excuse for not doing something.

38. According to the Urban Institute, the estimated number of deaths
resulting from uninsurance among adults age 25–64 is around 22,000 for year 2006. That's the bottom number. Another calculation came up with 27,000.

http://www.urban.org/UploadedPDF/411588_uninsured_dying.pdf

found in "Let Them Eat Cake": As 22k Die Annually, Elites Ask "What's the Rush on Health Care?"
http://www.openleft.com/diary/14298/let-them-eat-cake-as-22k-die-annually-denver-post-asks-whats-the-rush-on-health-care

Can you believe that number? I am just stunned. It's sickening that we keep get force fed RW talking points about "socialized medicine" with no one talking about the stark, tragic facts of the human cost we pay for putting up with rapacious "insurance" companies.

"Try" is a another word for failure, so if they don't complete health coverage reform by the fall, that will be another 4500-7500 Americans depending on the Senate's next recess.

I know. Some of the time between now and the Senate vote is unavoidable due to procedure, although I think they should forgo their precious vacations until the job is done. In any case, we should be using that time to continue burning up the phone lines letting our reps know we will not settle for a bad bill, much less no bill at all.

We need to do everything we can to demand the ear of our Senators and Reps - even if they are from 'the other' Party. Unless your Senator or Rep is taking time to go skiing in Chile or sunning in Italy or 'working' in Papua, New Guinea on a trade mission and won't be around - be around them. Inundate them.

It's time to collect all the stories and send them to them. The stories are here among us just as we are empathizing today with the DUer who just lost her daughter. The $3.00 shortage.

I hate to say this, but unless you're rich, we need to talk to Republicans and try to see
this for what it is - a big medicine theft of our lives.

Harry Reid can be a fool - but we might as well make lemonade while they take a break,

Arm yourself with some statistics to prove that the people in Canada, the UK, Ireland, Scandinavia are not dying off because of irresponsible policies or care.

Socialized does not mean Communism. Socialized can mean that its' for us - the people - not the schemers and lobbyists among the insurance, hospital, pharmaceutical lobbyists and those getting rich off of this. There are not enough out there buying with their steady income to keep the money flowing to us in our jobs, businesses, neighborhoods.

This is not because 'Mexicans' came her through the open arms of the corporations because they loved their hard work ethics/ethics and submissiveness. ('Mexican' to take in all the Hispanics who have found jobs and lives here just like our ancestors).

Harry Reid is a DLC loyalist - which is goes in the opposite direction of us. That is why he has the job.

Help us help ourselves and forget about that man - 'Mr. facilitator, big pockets' Reid.

Thinks Towh Hall activism, signatures or e-mails - tell them what the people want. Persuade others.

The insurance industry and other health care interests are lobbying hard against a government-sponsored, nonprofit, public health-insurance option, spending, according to the Washington Post, up to $1.4 million per day to sway Congress and public opinion.
