I used to follow the Senate very closely and never really stopped after I was no longer paid to do it. There's not much wrong with Harry Reid, if you ask me.
When the criminals secured every single branch of the Federal government, including the Senate, it was Harry Reid alone who took the fight to the GOP, threw the Senate into closed session, and told the Republicans something which made them shit their pants. From that day in late 2005, President Bush's evil agenda was finished, and we were spared the worst of the second term of the Worst President Ever, even though it was another year and a half before the GOP lost control of the Senate. That's all thanks to Harry Reid, damned near single-handedly (with a big shout out to Senator Byrd, who provided the procedural road-map for throwing a wrench into the Republican works).
It's easy for casual onlookers to overlook the primary duty of the Senate, which is to listen to the minority voice and to reach some sort of consensus which does not completely lock out that minority. It's especially easy to overlook because the Republicans never once took that duty into consideration when they controlled the Senate from 2003-2007. But Republicans are criminals and worthy of our contempt, not our surprise.
Now that the shoe is on the other foot, the Democratic Senate isn't as willing to completely cut out the GOP. And well it shouldn't, for consensus and respect for the minority position is one of the few things that makes America something akin to a Republic rather than a fascist dictatorship, which it very nearly became. Yeah, I want those damned fascist heads on a fucking platter, too. But that ain't how it works, and they're gonna get away with every last thing they did. If you want to change that, take your pitchforks and torches to the civil courts and to the homes of the criminals in question, not to Senator Reid.
Edit: So, to put it more clearly, most of the time when you folks call Senator Reid "spineless," what he's really doing is his job. If you don't like the kind of job he's doing, you'll find plenty of people who agree with your cutthroat ways on the other side of the aisle. But remember where that sort of shit got us.
