2. I like the sonic quality of that song....and I like some of John Mayer's music, but.....

..... that is the whiniest, poutiest "protest" song ever. Stop waiting for it to change, get off your ass and do something about it.

3. I always looked at it as a kind of sly, underhanded "protest" song...

The kids singing along until "wham!" one day the whole meaning sinks in (and I imagine this because I know a lot of people don't pay any overt attention to lyrics in songs--it's all about the sound and rhythm). And I think some of it is meant to reflect frustration at the way the "news" agencies dealt with the protests over the war and all.

I daresay having a popular song IS doing something about it.
