G. Gordon Liddy, Watergate Criminal turned Whackjob
from ThinkProgress:

G. Gordon Liddy says Obama is an ‘illegal alien’ born in a ‘hospital in Mombasa.’

G. Gordon Liddy, the man behind the first Watergate break-in and founding father of the “whacko wing” of the Republican party is now claiming that President Obama is an “undocumented illegal alien.” This afternoon, an oddly “catatonoic” Liddy told Chris Matthews that he has a written deposition from President Obama’s step-grandmother where she says that Obama was born in a hospital in Mombasa:

MATTHEWS: He (Obama) wasn’t born here and he’s never gone through a naturalization that you know of, right?

LIDDY: Not that I know of.

MATTHEWS: Therefore he’s here illegally. You’re saying he’s an undocumented alien.

LIDDY: Illegal alien.

MATTHEWS: You’ve said he was born in the Kenyan slums. That means he’s an illegal alien. That means he’s not only illegally president, he’s illegal in the US and he ought to be picked up…by your account he’s illegally in the country…how would you claim he was born in the Kenyan slums? You say that as if it were a fact…Do we have any evidence it ever happened?…

LIDDY: Yeah, I’ve got the deposition of the step-grandmother who said she witnessed it.

Liddy is the promoter of several anti-immigrant conspiracy theories. Last year, he claimed that immigrants come from Mexico because “they want to reconquer America.” When discussing the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor earlier this year, Liddy criticized her membership in the Latino civil rights group, National Council of La Raza. He said La Raza, in “illegal alien,” (Spanish) means “race.”

......

Update: On his radio show, Liddy frequently hosts "birther" Jerome Corsi to discuss his conspiracy theories.

......

Update: Alex Koppelman looks more into Liddy's claim:

What Liddy was referring to is actually an affidavit filed by a street preacher named Ron McRae, who conducted an interview with Sarah Obama, the second wife of President Obama's grandfather, through a translator. (Sarah Obama is not the president's biological grandmother, but he calls her "Granny Sarah.") In that interview, Sarah Obama does in fact say at one point that she was there for her grandson's birth. But that was a mistake, a confusion in translation. As soon as a jubilant McRae began to press her for further details about her grandson being born in Kenya, the family realized the mistake and corrected him. And corrected him. And corrected him.

3. He's always been a whackjob
I read his book and the guy is completely certifiable. He was even too nutty for the FBI. When he worked for Nixon, not only did he plan the Watergate break-in, but he was also planning the murder of a prominent journalist, firebombing the Brookings Institute, and kidnapping war protesters and taking them to Mexico.

It's no surprise the wingnuts love him.

6. Wasn't he the one who used to put his hands into flames just
to prove he could stand the pain? I vaguely remember that bit of craziness about one of the Watergate criminals.

10. I recall hearing something like that.
Yes, it's in his autobiography. http://tinyurl.com/l4y7oc
I told her to light her cigarette lighter and hold it out She did and I locked my gaze upon her eyes and placed my hand, palm down, over the flame. Presently the flesh turned black and when she smelled the scent of burning meat, Sherry Stevens broke from my gaze and pulled the lighter away from my hand.

12. you might mean his watergate cohort E. Howard Hunt, who lost
a libel suit he placed against a small newspaper that claimed he was in on the JFK assassination

during the trials (he won the first one, lost the second), he contradicted himself on his whereabouts during the assassination, giving two different stories as to his whereabouts

14. E. Howard Hunt was definately in Dallas but given Liddy's connection to
Watergate, I was wondering whether Liddy's whereabouts ahd ever been conclusively accounted for.

15. he was either a DA, or with the FBI at the time, I think.
At age 29, Liddy became the youngest Bureau Supervisor at FBI national headquarters in Washington, D.C., earning multiple commendations from J. Edgar Hoover. He left the FBI in 1962 to practice international law in Manhattan.

Liddy worked as a lawyer in New York City and a prosecutor in Dutchess County, New York. In 1966, he organized the arrest and unsuccessful trial of Timothy Leary. As an assistant district attorney, he once fired a pistol into the courtroom ceiling during jury summation.<1> He ran unsuccessfully for the post of District Attorney and then for the United States House of Representatives in 1968, but used his political profile to run the presidential campaign of Richard Nixon in the 28th district of New York.

........

sooooo, there is a crucial gap

Mr. Liddy, can you PROVE you didn't kill president kennedy? do you have a certificate that says you were in Manhattan at the time? prove you didn't kill him. prove you didn't kill
Mary Jo Kopechne while you're at it

19. Thank you for the info. I remember watching the series "The Men Who Killed Kennedy" on the History..
Edited on Fri Jul-24-09 12:06 AM by ControlledDemolition
... Channel and there was an episode where an enhancement was done (I think it was the Mary Morman photo) on the 'grassy knoll' area. Beside one of the shooters was a man wearing some kind of construction worker garb with a moustache... I don't know why but at the time G. Gorden Libby came to mind.

Also, to my mind, anyone receiving a commendation from Hoover is immediately suspect.

(Edit: To fix a couple of typos.)

20. you might be interested to know that the History Channel refuses to
show that series anymore, opting for endless reruns of the Beyond Conspiracy/Beyond the Magic Bullet, etal garbage

it had something to do with reorganization within channels, as lots of Kennedy stuff used to be on A&E, when they consolidated (perhaps because of ownership changes) channel/content, a decision was made not to allow the anti-coincidence theory series to be shown again

23. Also, the DVD pack is short of two of the most revealing episodes!
One of which completely implicated J. Edgar Hoover and LBJ. The more I learn about LBJ the more disgusting an individual I find him to be.

Bill Sol Estes... Bobby Baker... Had JFK lived, LBJ was on his way to the 'big house'!

25. He was afraid of rats.
He read that some native tribes would eat parts of their enemies to make themselves fearless against the enemies. So he killed a rat and ate part of it.
He was also afraid of heights and electricity. So when he was young climbed a power pole and scooted out on the cross bar until his hair stood up from the close proximity of the power lines.

22. heh...did you see Charlie Pierce on Countdown tonight? he basically asked
Shuster that very question, to which Shuster quite revealingly overreacted.

Pierce said it's been the M$M that has allowed/spearheaded horrorshows like the birthers to be allowed airtime, after Shuster showed a clip by chuck todd blaming it all on the internets

catch the rerun if you can. it's also posted here somewhere from msnbc, I think
