A matter of respect!

The cops in this country have NO respect for the citizens they are suppose to protect and serve. In other words they're ASSHOLES!

The Gates incident is NOT just about race. It's about respect. Lack of respect is the excuse cops use to do anything they frigging feel like and lack of respect is what is causing the victims of police brutality to react disrespectfully!

It's a disrespect circle jerk!

So, what is going on? Well, thanks to the "war on drugs" that has gone on unsuccessfully for 35 years, the cops think they have the God given right to treat the American people like animals. Because of this attitude the cops have, the people they come into contact with are naturally reacting to their abusive ways. This is a NORMAL human reaction. It's NORMAL to resist someone when you feel they are threatening your life.

The resisting of direct orders by the public is the COPS fault.

So what to we do about the epidemic of police abuse in this country?

well, since they use lack of respect for an excuse for everything they do I suggest...

OPERATION DISRESPECT!

Disrespect cops and refuse to follow orders every time you come in contact with them. Maybe then they will get it through their thick heads that we've had it with their behavior!

population of the US is too comfortable and brain-dead to get out in large-enough numbers.

On the other hand - intelligent, direct action can be effective in this war. Target the individual, not the system - because the system is too large, powerful, and entrenched. You do not attack your enemy's strength, you go after them where they are weak(er).

But, you are correct when you say, "no pain, no gain." There is risk involved in what I see as the only possibly-successful course of action.

It all boils down to the loss of civility in our society. People don't keep their tempers in check, say things that really don't need to be said, and generally behave like self-absorbed swine.

The Gates arrest is a classic example. Citizen spouts off at mouth uncontrollably, Police Officer decides he doesn't want to put up with the abuse, hilarity follows. Everyone walks around with an "us versus them" attitude that is self fulfilling.

I, for one, am tired of the shouting and the pushing.

I've tried countless times to treat big-city cops with respect, and it gets thrown back in my face about 80% of the time. Maybe they don't like the way I look, the car I drive, the fact that I'm on a bike, the phase of the moon--I don't know, and I don't care, but the idea that most cops work on a "Tit For Tat" basis just isn't supported by the evidence available to us.

I read Gates' memoir (think it was called "Colored People") and I believe he grew up in the South and I don't think he comes from money but is obviously very intelligent and managed to move up in the world. He was born with a superior intellect that even an early environment couldn't hold down. What about a poor, not-too-bright White man from Arkansas? Does he have the same chances? Will he be as respected? Maybe in his small town, but not in the rest of the world.

I am taking what you say to mean that he still got harassed, but my point is that this was an unusual situation. He wasn't stopped on the street; a neighbor made a call to police and described him and his driver. His house had been broken into before. Harassment to me is when a person is just on the street minding their own business. His behavior was suspicious (trying to break down a door). I had the police stop for me when they saw me trying to open a lock. They are just doing their jobs.

But in this incident, it seemed like Crowley was trying to provoke Gates into doing something criminal, after they learned that this black man was the owner of this home, and not a suspected robber.
Crowley was smart enough, and deliberate enough, to persuade Gates to come out of his house so he can arrest him for disorderly conduct.
