Cornyn to vote against Sotomayor
http://www.wkbt.com/Global/story.asp?S=10784456

Republican Sen. John Cornyn, the head of his party's Senate campaign arm, said Friday he'll vote against Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor, siding with GOP leaders and conservatives who are lining up against President Barack Obama's nominee to be the first Hispanic justice.

The Texas Republican, whose constituents are one-third Hispanic, acknowledged that his decision to oppose Sotomayor could carry political risks and said he was announcing it with "regret and some sadness."

"Voting to confirm a judge — this judge or any judge — despite doubts would certainly be the politically expedient thing to do, but I don't believe it would be the right thing to do," said Cornyn, who said he came away from Sotomayor's confirmation hearings still wondering, "Who is the real Judge Sonia Sotomayor?"

(snip)
In the end, Cornyn said he believes "the stakes are too high" for him to support a nominee who might approach important constitutional issues like gun and property rights "from a liberal, activist perspective."

3. Another rethug exposes himself to be a racist pig - what else is new?
She is one of the most qualified nominees ever. All of this rethug opposition to her boils down to racism, pure and simple.

Hatch Will Oppose Sotomayor
http://corner.nationalreview.com/post/?q=MDJkM2E1NzRiY2E1YWIxYzRlMjI0NmY4ZjE2MmQ0M2U=

– Sen. Orrin G. Hatch (R-Utah), a longtime member and former chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, today issued the following statement on the nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to replace Supreme Court Justice David Souter:

“I entered into the confirmation process of Judge Sotomayor with the strong desire to vote in favor of her nomination. Her credentials and experience are very impressive and her personal demeanor is pleasantly cordial and friendly. I found that the great respect I have for Judge Sotomayor’s heritage and history added even more to my desire to carefully review her record and opinions in hopes of finding them truly grounded in the rule of law and acceptable to earn the support and trust of the American people and myself.

“Arriving at a final decision was particularly difficult because I like and highly respect Judge Sotomayor and, in general, give a great deal of deference to any President’s nominee. The prospect of a woman of Puerto Rican heritage serving on the Supreme Court brought great excitement to me and says a lot about America.

11. I so hope Texas Republicans take the hit they have coming.
It's about time for Texas to turn blue again.

Keep it up, Republicans. Y'all are doing a great job of alienating people.

18. Cornyn? Hatch?
Every time Cornyn opens his mouth he proves he's a shallow thinking jerk.

Hatch? The powerful Senator from Utah? The place where molesting and having sex with underage girls has been going on for years under the guise of religion and he has done nothing to stop it? Don't kid yourself, he could stop it if he wanted to, or throw his weight around and make enough noise so it would be stopped. When he votes against THAT and tries to stop it I'll consider that he might believe in justice.

17. Yeah, who is the real Sonia Sotomayor?
I mean, someone who grew up dirt poor on some of the meanest streets America has to offer its children, part of the original group who broke the gender barrier at Ivy League Princeton, graduated summa cum laude from Princeton (extra points: compare and contrast with the Ivy League career of Son of Privilege, Yale Legacy George W. Bush), 17 years of service on the federal bench, and poor John Cornyn can't quite get a handle on her. What is she really like? He probably lays awake night, bothering his wife and disturbing the dog, pondering what could possibly be the motivating factor for someone whose greatest aspiration should have been being a domestic servant. Why would someone be so crass as to achieve as much as she has?

Goodness, the questions that must bedevil John Cornyn's little mind!
