Anyone want to check my math? Doesn't this seem high and in contradiction to what everyone is saying about it being "just a flu."

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - State health officials say 22 people have died from swine flu in Florida.

The Department of Health released an updated death toll Wednesday, with labs confirming 10 new H1N1 deaths in the past week.

Federal health officials have sent testing supplies to the state's four labs, allowing state technicians to test samples without the additional step of sending them to the Centers for Disease Control.

The Florida Department of Health reports a total of 2915 confirmed cases of H1N1 swine flu.

3. Oh, tell me I did something boneheaded.
My sugar was crashing when I did the math. Would not surprise me a bit.

I'm trying a new protein shake to see if I can use it as a meal replacement. I'm guessing NOT!

4. It's probably a lot lower than that, as there may be people who had mild cases that were not
diagnosed.

16. "22 just seems to be a big number." - wtf? It's less than 1%. Sheesh...
Some people really won't be happy unless millions die, just so they can say "I told you so".

17. Can't help it.
When it's happening around you, it's an awakening. It would be easier to take if there was a comment on each death, telling us what factor contributed to their demise. Ten people, just in the last week.

I will say, that numbers do matter. They represent people who had full lives and left behind friends and family who are today, in pain.

Ya...That's less than 1%.
In Canada, the mortality rate is comparable to seasonal influenza save for in First Nations reserves where it is considerably higher.

I figure out ten percent and multiply by two. And, since I have a full meal in my belly, the math comes easier.

19. I don't think it would have mattered, in my case.
When you get hypoglycemic, you can't hold two thoughts in your head at the same time. I probably would have hit the percentage button, and still would have moved the decimal to the right two places.

Or, I would have come up with .75 and rounded it up to .8 and still would have seen it as 8%. Or worse, I would have known that .8 was less than 1, but in the time it takes to blink, would have forgotten this salient point and still concluded, it was 8%.

Hypoglycemia is a bitch. Brilliant one second, and on the doorstep to dementia the next.
