Nearly 2,000 show up for free health care in Va. - Story with pics (Wow!)

Nearly 2,000 show up for free health care in Va.

By SUE LINDSEY Associated Press Writer

July 24, 2009

WISE, Va. - Nearly 2,000 people crowded onto a southwest Virginia fairgrounds Friday and waited hours to receive free dental care, eyeglasses and medical procedures.

Remote Area Medical founder Stan Brock said the daily limit of 1,600 patients for the three-day clinic in Wise County was reached by 5:30 a.m. Friday. Another 200 people were admitted to the treatment area later in the morning, but several hundred more had to be turned away.

"If there's an event that more dramatically displays the need for health care, I don't know what it is," said Gov. Timothy M. Kaine, who spent an hour volunteering at a registration table Friday.

Brock said the number of people showing up for free care because they have either no jobs or no health insurance demonstrates a need to revamp the American health care system.

"It's outrageous that we've got all these people waiting all day," Brock said.

26. When RAM holds events like these, can we help the attendees Register to Vote?
Their lack of access to health care has a lot to do with who gets voted into office.

If they're not registered to vote, then others decide their health care.

If they are registered to vote and vote against their best interests, then they need to understand the connection.

93. I've never even heard of Remote Area Medical until this OP
But this passage is about to ensure they get a donation from me:

"Brock started his organization with the goal of using volunteer medical professionals to serve underdeveloped nations, but it now devotes 64 percent of its efforts to care in the U.S. because the need is so great."

That is a damned shame.

He was an executive at a health insurer and he thought he was going to a health fair. He quit his job and has been telling Congress about what his company did. He's also told Bill Moyer's. I'll try to find the link.

The first reason they're opposed is the cost. If that's true, they should be writhing in agony over the cost of the war and the occupation. If the liberation of a foreign country is worth the devastating cost to us in money and lives, aren't we worth the cost of health care?

55. Nope, They Don't Seem To Care
Money, status, and the power that their jobs give them seems to be all that they care about. Screw their constituents, who they won't inform, and everyone else who is suffering because of the insurance industry, big pharma, banks, etc. They are in, they have their jobs, health care, homes and a promising future, why should they care about the millions who are suffering :sarcasm:? It's easier to play political chess and make empty speeches and promises because they know that they will be re-elected regardless.

47. Much better to pay for a $500,000 septicemia case than to fill a tooth before it gets infected.
There was a child who died recently due to septicemia from an infected tooth his family could not afford to get care for. Medicaid paid something like $500K when all the kid originally needed was an $80 filling (or less.)

Probably happens every day, but this one made the news somehow. I think it was in Baltimore.

Nearly 2,000 show up for free health care in Va., July 24, 2009

This is from last year's clinic:

Getty Images 12 months ago

WISE, VA - JULY 26: Patients wait to have teeth pulled at the Remote Area Medical (RAM), clinic July 26, 2008 in Wise, Virginia. The free clinic, which lasts 2 1/2 days, is the largest of its kind in the nation, and organizers expected to treat more than 2,500 people over the weekend, mostly providing dental and vision services from more than 1,400 volunteers. Residents of the "coal counties" of Appalachia are some of the most impoverished in the nation, and most are either underinsured or have no health insurance at all. For many, the RAM clinic is the only medical care they may receive each year. Healthcare for the nation's disadvantaged has become one of the main issues in this year's presidential race.

One, is because of the good work these folks are doing to help people in need
and two, is because this event is here, not in some remote third world country, and these pictures are of Americans, waiting, waiting, waiting, for the basic decency of being treated.

Ashamed I am. How can there be any blathering fool in Congress who CANNOT get this?

that the corporate executives of insurance companies, HMOs, and big pharma should be made, by law to attend these events. Then they can explain first hand why they will not help unless you can afford their services. Personally I am developing or starting to recognize that I might be bi-polar, the worst medical condition a patient can have, mental illness. My thoughts go from anger to suicide and everything in between. I becoming more hopeless.

73. Now that is a plan.
Would someone contact the organization to see if this can be done? Or would their schedule be set already? I will NEVER forget the last time I was in DC, Ray-gun was still president. It was December, and danged cold. And I remember feeling ashamed of living in a country where HOMELESS people were sleeping over subway grating for the heat, and across from the White House, in our nation's capitol. I had always hoped that Ray-gun would have to see them everyday, but I am sure he was shielded from the reality of his horrible politics.

67. How about Canada or a European country sending the U.S. this kind of medical aid to shame us
into providing our people with healthcare. There was recently a free dental care event in my community where over 1500 were helped, yet in my local paper this past week there was a smug letter to the editor which stated that there was already healthcare for all who wanted it. Healthcare is perfect for all of those who have it and can afford it although they may be in for a rude surprise when they actually need to use it or when something terrible goes wrong.

While I understand this incredible operation takes place in a particularly poverty-stricken section of our country, it's a safe bet at this point it could be set up ANYWHERE in the US of A and hordes of people would come flocking. 47 million faces of want and need.

Thank you so much for posting - absolutely heart-wrenching.

77. Events like this should be organized ALL OVER!
I think it would be wonderful to organize events like this all over the country.

I bet there are non-profit health groups and health professionals who would work for free for a few days, in order
to help people.

The lines that form----are a testament to what is happening in the country and the sorry state of healthcare.

Those lines of people waiting are undeniable.

As we slip further into this recession/Depression--the media is trying to hide the fact that many are suffering.
We're told to look for the "green shoots" and enjoy the "silver linings". Things are worsening for the people
who are not in the top ten percent.

These lines for healtcare draw attention to many problems in our country--with healthcare and the economy.

Truly---mind blowing.

80. Republicans and Libertarians think this is a great way
to provide health care to the poor. Seriously. One of the KOS commentators posted a blog about volunteering at this event this year, and one of the Republican commenters in essence said that events like these were a great way to provide health care to the poor, and should be encouraged.

How fucking pathetic. Can you imagine an event like this happening in Canada or France, whose health care systems are so reviled by the conservatives? No, because THEY DON'T NEED THEM.

We also need to ask, what country is this that people line up and receive health care in tents and stalls outside.
