IMO, I am guilty of it too. In the heat of the moment. But I've seen where it then leads to viscious name calling and useless back and forth that does nothing to add to the topic. Maybe DU would be better off if one of the rules were to ban swearing. I really think it would cut down on the nasty attacks and blanket arguments that plague this site.

I think swearing makes people on here much more emotional and defensive, and more willing to lash back out when they otherwise might not. The threads devolve into angry shouting contests.

The DUers whom I am reading seem to get the most emotional about issues or personal attacks. Most "swearing" passes without a ripple. I do it too. Usually I am swearing about the Repubs or some idiotic conservative policy that makes me want to tear metal with my teeth.

Does swearing bother you particularly? If so you need to realize that other people often do not share your sensibilities and perhaps make allowances or block the people who offend you the most. You have that option here.
