When people are struggling to feed their families, providing for their pets often becomes too much and those pets are often abandoned. But a new local organization is hoping to prevent that.
Bourbonnais residents Sharon Zonkel and Linda Smith, after a year of planning, recently started the Kankakee County Animal League to help unemployed or displaced locals in need of financial assistance to provide necessities to keep their pets at home.
"We (want to) try to do something for the ones that can't help their own animals because they aren't working before they end up dumping their dog on the road," Zonkel said.
