Now for something completely different...A toad in the garden |
|
As we all know, toads, frogs etc respond to the environment, and what is being dumped into it. We have always been very careful not to use insecticides etc in our gardens, but still , have not had frogs or toads for years.
Tonight in the garden, a big healthy toad was by the beer we left for the slugs. Not sure if he was eating slugs or drinking the beer.. he looked a little happy for the toad species.
But it was so nice to see.

It was a healthy fat toad, with just the right number of legs etc. Hubby and I just sort of watched him for a while, very peaceful.

4. one day last fall, late last fall |
|
i went snow goose watching. the trail was mucky and there were hunters looking to kill some ducks. right in the middle of this trail was a great fat toad, brown. he did not move. i petted him, and wondered what was wrong, then remembered they sleep all winter. i put him far off the trail, imagining a heartless hunter squishing him for fun. do you think he survived?

I used to see them all the time in my mothers garden. I liked to hold them for a second and then let them go. Strange past time for a little girl, but they were very interesting creatures.;)
The last time I saw and heard a toad was when I was growing an herb garden. He lived under the Prostrate Rosemary and tweetled at me all evening. The little toad and the aromatic herbs made it a perfect place to sit and relax.
I think your toad may be coming for the beer, though. I hope you get him a good brand.:toast:

5. Well not sure the brand of beer.. but the slugs love it.. |
|
I thought it might be the beer also. He had a very big smile, even for a toad.

9. You have a gem here..... |
|
you could email the beer manufacturer and tell them that your garden slugs prefer their beer over other brands and suggest an advertising slogan based on slugs slithering speedily toward their beer.;)
I doubt that they would offer you a free case, but I bet it would be unique in their experience. Especially if you added that it made toads smile and sing.
I wouldn't buy beer for my slugs. I got them bread making yeast and mixed up a batch of that. I could tell how well it was working because my husband would make small involuntary yucking sounds when he went to empty the traps.
