Euthanasia hidden in health care bill?

As a baby boomer who is officially becoming a senior citizen this year, you can imagine my dismay when I became aware of part of President Barack Obama's proposed health care plan, namely the mandatory counseling for seniors every five years, more often if we should be sick or in a rest home.

Besides recognizing the obvious invasion of privacy and choice, I have two questions: Who would provide the counseling? And what is the purpose?

Three little words jumped out at me — end of life. So, will someone be encouraging me to see that I have lived my life and should step aside to let the younger people use our now-limited resources? Of course, I should look at this as poetic justice. The generation that legalized aborting its children will now be euthanized by them. Are you concerned? I am.

talking to his imaginary friends.

Depression in the elderly is a serious problem in our society. This sounds much more like an attempt to prevent elder suicide rather than encourage it.

Here's alink to snopes with is already debunking this meme.

2. From the hearings I watched, there was no discussion about
euthansia, but there WAS discussion about making it mandatory for everyone to have a living will. There are countless people who are put on life support for who knows how long, and it's against THEIR wishes. Most of the time nobody knows the patients wishes and the children demand life support out of guilt or simply not being willing to make that difficult decision.

FWIW, I've already told my husband & kids "ABSOLUTELY NO LIFE SUPPORT FOR ME!" The last time my son & I had this discussion I told him "If you ever do anything like that to me I swear I'll find a way to come back and haunt you till the day you die!"

There are others who feel differently, but that should be THEIR DECISION. The only objection I heard to the mandatory living will durint the hearings was how much was it going to cost the patient. One Dem had hers done by an attorney and she said it was pretty pricy, but others explained that they had done theirs via an online form and it was free.

5. It is so hard for the family when someone doesn't express their wishes.
Edited on Sat Jul-25-09 03:03 PM by Kadie
My mom had a stroke and we did not know what she would have wanted. We did our best. When my father became ill, he and I had a very long detailed conversation and all of our decisions were based on his wishes.

My husband and I have everything written out. I didn't want our kids to ever have the burden of making the kind of decisions I had to for my mom.

18. Exactly.
I would think that everyone would want a living will if they were given the opportunity to have one or help paying for one.

12. it is tough when you don't know. when my dad went into the hospital,
and he wasn't very lucid, my sisters who (thank god he had at least signed a health proxy) were left to decide for him had to decide all kinds of things. none of us really knew what he wanted, though.... and he was diagnosed with cancer and had three months and then less time than that even.... we had to decide about tubes and such. we just didn't want him to suffer. I tell bob all the time what I want... and since my dad died I want to make sure we get it in writing!!

15. Might also discuss pre-planning funerals...
Again, if the person can make their wishes known ahead of time, that can save grieving families a lot of time, hard decisions, and money. Even if it's not a formal pre-paid plan or anything... just a discussion and notes taken...

6. Fear, fear, fear is all they got.
Yes, the government is going to kill you because you're old.

The irony here is that there is *documented evidence* that thousands die needlessly each year because they don't have affordable access the health care system. I guess those actual real people with families and friends simply don't matter in comparison with this person's imagined fears.

It really pisses me off.

this misinformation!! we have the internet and can find out the truth about anything by just looking it up. don't just take anyone's word for it!! not fox news, not msnbc... not your local station.... it doesn't take much to get actual factual information nowadays.
