Revealed: the secret evidence of global warming Bush tried to hide

http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2009/jul/26/climate-change-obama-administration

Photos from US spy satellites declassified by the Obama White House provide the first graphic images of how the polar ice sheets are retreating in the summer. The effects on the world's weather, environments and wildlife could be devastating

Suzanne Goldenberg and Damian Carrington
The Observer, Sunday 26 July 2009

Graphic images that reveal the devastating impact of global warming in the Arctic have been released by the US military. The photographs, taken by spy satellites over the past decade, confirm that in recent years vast areas in high latitudes have lost their ice cover in summer months.

The pictures, kept secret by Washington during the presidency of George W Bush, were declassified by the White House last week. President Barack Obama is currently trying to galvanise Congress and the American public to take action to halt catastrophic climate change caused by rising levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

3. Climate change
this is shocking! I have not realise how bad the climate change is until now! What are the effects of such big change! Will the desert going to filled with snow and Arctic will become a desert? I know that since the climate in one place become warmer in another place will become colder. Does this means that we will have the "same" weather; globally; but in a different place?

4. Welcome to DU.
What leads you to believe that a warming climate in one place will lead to a colder climate in another?

Climate change will cause erratic and unpredictable shifts in local climates. Forests could become plains, plains could become deserts, and deserts become hell. It is worse than previously thought, and the past criminal administration worked hard to hide the evidence from us.

13. If I am looking at those pictures correctly, they show lots of ice in 2008 and none in 2007

We do know for a fact though that in 2008 the very first successful Northwest passage was completed by three ships..Oops after looking at them again I see I misread the dates. The ice was in 2006 not 2008 Sorry.

6. So depending on how quickly we all start to heat up or freeze
there is no political issue that will matter anymore. Interesting that weather will be the great equalizer...no amount of money is enough to bribe mother nature.

8. Unfortunately...
Money can buy congressmen to ignore the problem until it's too late, gated communities in places that won't be hard hit, and armed guards to secure it from us riff-raff.

Remember, most of the people who died on the Titanic were 3rd class passengers.

7. National Snow and Ice Data Center
http://www.nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/

This site has a graph of Arctic Sea ice extent updated daily. It also has a map of the Arctic regions showing the areas covered by ice.

2009 is on track to have a minimum sea ice extent in September that is a little greater than the minimum in 2007. 2007 was the year of minimum sea ice so far.

Much of the change has been to increase the area of open waters north of Russia and Siberia. Hudson's Bay, on the other hand, melted a little later than average this year, which would be consistent with cooler temperatures in North America.

A key indicator for the future is how much year old or older ice is left by the minimum in September each year. Ice that is formed anew each winter is very susceptible to melting the next summer. Most of the old ice is north of Canada. Besides melting where it is, it also flows out of the Arctic Ocean just off the northeastern shore of Greenland on a south-flowing current.

Funds would be far better spent on satellites to study earth than on the various "send a man to xxx" missions.

12. "The Obama administration has already taken steps to tackle America's flagging scientific lead. "
I suppose that sentence at the end is supposed to give me encouragement but I'm saddened by it. The thought that we are flagging in scientific research is depressing. :(

14. We have been flagging for years,
it only got worse under the Bush Administration. Hell, in Texas they are still trying to include creationism in science class as if evolution is a matter of opinion. Pathetic. I think the neo-cons would be perfectly satisfied with a Mexican style government.

15. No need for alarm.
The end times will be here soon so environmental protection is not at all necessary.
