Texas home displays 'Hispanics Keep Out' sign
http://www.khou.com/news/state/stories/khou090723_tnt_hispanics-keep-out-sign.6acf5e59.html
AZLE, Texas - A "Hispanics Keep Out" sign displayed on the front of an Azle home has stirred up unease for some residents in the Tarrant County neighborhood.
...

"Well, you know, I don't care," said a 72-year-old woman who answered the door at the home. "I'm upset about them coming over here illegally, too."
...

"We think this is our privilege as an American to protect our property," she said. "This is our property."

When asked if it would be better to post a sign that simply said "Keep Out," the homeowner said, "I don't want to keep out everybody, okay?"

I don't understand how, even from her viewpoint, she thinks she is protecting her property. Any potential trouble makers, of any ethnicity, would simply ignore the sign, so it does nothing towards protecting her property. However, what it does do is make her a potential target.

It protects nothing, and quite possibly increases her danger.

She's not protecting anything, and I suspect she knows it. That sign is nothing more than a racist political statement and, if you watch the video at that link, she appears, at least to me, to be very proud of it.

You should see my wife's relatives in East Texas. Which is why she moved to Austin in 1972.

6. Agree. I loathe that there are people like this in the world, but it's better to know who they are

than to drive them underground where, in my opinion, they're more likely to forment violence.

ETA: Having that sign on one's house sends this message: "I'm a bigot."

7. My first reaction is to laugh out loud.
"I don't want to keep out everybody, okay?"

So, her house is the Freeper party house and she just wants to keep the Hispanics out.

Then, I'm like, well she probably has a gun and I know Texas has the "Shoot First; Ask Questions Later" law, and it just seems like it's going to end badly.

9. Texas doesn't corner the market in racist stupidity
Edited on Sun Jul-26-09 07:19 AM by newfie11
I live in the western panhandle of Nebraska and there is also a dislike of Hispanics. When I lived in western South Dakota there is the same feeling about the Lakota, when I lived in New Mexico people made fun and derogatory remarks about the Navajo.

I am a 6th generation Texan and I was raised to respect the person regardless of color. Unfortunally these big mouth racist idiots seem to get front page in the news.

12. I don't think anyone here intended to pick on Texas.
I certainly wasn't. Texas just happens to be where this lady lives. Hell, I live in Pennsylvania and we have our share of this crap right here. In Philadelphia, arguably the most liberal part of the state, we had that steak shop owner with the "English Only" sign.

I know that she doesn't represent Texas. That clip shows that at least some of the lady's white neighbors find the sign offensive.

15. The city council implied that this sign will actually attract trespssers rather than keep them out
This was being discussed Friday on the Dallas radio. The councilman or mayor, I don't remember which, said they couldn't prohibit the homeonwer from posting this sign because of our pesky free speech right, but that they did advise her that the sign would stir up ill will and would probably attract problems rather than stop them.

19. Exactly what I said in the OP.
If she truly does think that she's protecting herself then she is badly mistaken. Of course, I don't think that she truly thinks that. It's not about protection. It about making a racist political statement, IMHO.

born on the fourth of july, 1937. if only she were a dying breed. growing up in small town southern california in the 1950s, i encountered many a person of her ilk.

i have no doubt this old texan is not a rare bird. those of my generation who are like her have learned to hide their hatred. or maybe they got over it? ojalá.
