Enlightmen me here - blue dog, yellow dog... ?

Not to be dumb, but I've lost the distinction. What's a Blue Dog Democrat vs. a Yellow Dog Democrat vs. a Red Dog Democrat vs. a Fuscia Dog Democrat?

1. OK...
Blue Dog - A Conservative Democrat. The idea behind the name is "we get pulled from the right wing, and pulled from the left wing until we turn BLUE!" The idea is that they are Centrists, slightly right leaning.

Yellow Dog - Will ALWAYS vote Democrat. The idea behind the name is "That man would vote for a YELLOW DOG if it were a Democrat

I'm waiting for the Rabid Dog Democrat, myself :)

11. blue dogs sounds a lot like dixiecrats
Dems, usually Southern, that are sometimes hard to distinguish from Reps in their social/fiscal priorities

Of course the Dixicrats were Civil Rights disrupters and war hawks. Once the CR Act passed under LBJ and Nixon's election, the D-crats saw their base move to the Reps (can't say to the right, they were already there) so most of them changed parties. Even some latecomers, such as Phil Gramm, used Dem party strength to get into office only to defect once they got incumbency and powerful supporters/backers.

9. A yellow dog Democrat will vote for a yellow dog before voting for a Republican.
I heard that from my yellow dog Democrat grandmother in Texas.

10. All of this explains the progress or lack thereof, of legislation
When the republicans have 51 senators, their agenda flows through without friction. The Democrats can have 60 senators, and there is still hand wringing over every piece of legislation, not to mention watering things down to court republicans.
