Tornado Warning in NYC!
CNN, tornado warning for Queens? The storm just passed over Manhattan and it was like a monsoon, kind of amazing for New York. But tornado watch? I've never seen that here before.

4. Why do you think this country is so imperfect that you feel the need to pal around with terrorists?

Once in the mid 80s, once a couple of years ago, and once in 1976.

The one in Queens in 1985 that was referred to on that page - I could see the funnel cloud from my window in the Bronx.

9. Eastern Long Islander here, there are water spouts off shore every so often...
and extreme low pressure bands like tornados on occassion.

12. Tornadoes in the northeast...
...aren't rare, but in urban areas generally they are rare-ish. When they do hit, needless to say they can be very destructive. You can follow the path of the 1952 Worcester tornado today if you know what to look for. The base of its funnel approached 3/4ths of a mile in places.

14. We get tornados around here a lot, but...
most of them are small-- nothing like the huge twisters in the Midwest and they won't send Dorothy off to meet the Tin Man.

They do cause a fair amount of damage, but it's localized, with a tree down here and there, a roof blown off... And they don't last long-- most of the time they come and go so fast that it takes a day or two examining the damage path to decide whether it was a tornado or not.
