Palin leaves office

http://www.salon.com/politics/war_room/2009/07/26/palin/

Sarah Palin is not the governor of Alaska anymore. On Sunday afternoon, Alaska time, she took the stage at the annual governor's picnic in Fairbanks to give her final speech in office, and then officially handed over power to her lieutenant governor, Sean Parnell, who was sworn in as governor just after his predecessor's address.

The speech itself was utterly disjointed, jumping from the patriotism of America's troops to energy independence, Hollywood starlets threatening the Second Amendment and a repeat of Palin's argument that remaining a lame-duck governor wouldn't have served the people of Alaska well. It was combative, too -- the outgoing governor argued with a heckler about that lame-duck rationale.

And, of course, it featured plenty of media-bashing, as Palin told reporters, "You represent what could and should be a respected, honest profession that could and shoudlo be a cornerstone of our democracy. Democracy depends on you and that's why our troops are willing to die for you. So how about in honor of the American soldier ya quit making things up?"

It was, in other words, vintage Palin, a reminder of the remarks she made when she suddenly announced her resignation three weeks ago.

8. The whole first part of the speech, she used "the troops" as a shield to hide behind,
deflecting all criticism of herself. She didn't really have any excuse for bringing them up, so she just did it by making some lame statement about how so many fine members of the military had come from right there in Fairbanks! Hey, let's hear it for THE MILITARY! OUR BRAVE FIGHTING MEN AND WOMEN!!!! YEA!!!!!! :applause: :woohoo: :patriot:

She knew that was a guaranteed way to start out with applause, so she used it.

From there, she proceeded to lecture the media about how our brave soldiers had died for their right to free speech, so she asked them, on behalf of ALL OUR SOLDIERS WHO HAVE DIED, "QUIT MAKIN' THINGS UP!"

She very carefully dropped the G. Not "quit making things up." "Quit makin' things up."

Later, she was very brave in demanding that the media leave Sean Parnell's kids alone. Yeah, because that's exactly why people go after your kids: because you become the governor of Alaska. Once that happens, man, you're fair game. You just can't avoid the constant onslaught of the paparazzi wherever you go, if your old man's governor of Alaska.

Just an amazing combobulation of senseless word salad...what we have come to expect from the magnificent Sarah.

I am not a Palin supporter in any way, believe me I think she's totally bat shit crazy. But she does have a son in the army.

15. But she didn't bring him up in that context.
At least then she would have had SOME flimsy excuse for talking about the troops. She had none. She was just using them (and the recent deaths of a few from Alaska) to hide behind. Shameful.

2. This stuck out for me:
When she talked about God's graces helping those who help themselves. It finally has dawned on me what this woman and the right wing believe. If you are having problems as in not being able to get chemotherapy for your cancer or pay your mortgage because the company you worked for went out of business, it is because you have not earned God's love and you are not a righteous enough person to have come under "His" is good graces. It is all your fault for being ungodly.

6. The whole "grace" thing is a hot-button in the Christian community...
...and I say that as a Christian.

I see people every day in Silicon Valley, driving $50,000+ German autos, buying all of the groceries they need, stopping at BevMo for some fine wines to wash it all down with...

...then I see people suffering in ways that can hardly be articulated.

As a Christian, God's grace means whatever it means to you. It means that you might be in unspeakable agony while the rich guy next to you is getting a blow job.

7. It's a basic tenet of 'prosperity theology'
and commonly preached at charismatic, pentecostal churches like Palin's:

9. My Pentecostal church story:
An ex-girlfriend took me to her church...a Pentecostal curch.

The pastor's wife told the story of a CD that got stuck in the player.

She said "CD Player, in the name of JESUS, I command you to OPEN..."

And supposedly it did.

I'm a Christian.

I file that story away in the catgory of "Crasy Assed Shit."

12. If it did open, and it very well might have, it wasn't cause Jesus heard her plea.
Coincidence has done more to encourage religious insanity than the bible.

10. So true. According to those tenets, God rewards the most faithful to him
by making them wealthy on earth beyond their wildest dreams. Thus, wealth equals virtue, because God permits only the good to prosper, while the lazy and unfaithful are revealed by their poverty and their demands that the government take care of them.

3. Maudlin, smarmy, snarky, un-tethered to reality, self-righteous . . . .
And we only watched about two minutes' worth where she blathered about "The Troops" and then demanded the press "stop making things up".

Funny thing was, she never got around to actually discussing any specific things they'd made up . . .unless she did so later in the speech?

Like a real bad reality show.

And thank goodness she's out of office.
