Bill of Rights for the 21st century |
|
Seems like we need to establish a new Bill of Rights to address some basic needs:
1. The right of the people to access health care shall not be abridged. 2. Every child shall have a right to quality education 3. The right of workers to form unions shall not be infringed 4. Every person shall have a right to affordable housing 5. No business having operations within the US shall terminate a worker's employment for the purpose of obtaining cheaper labor elsewhere

1. With a few modifications ... |
|
1. The right of the people to access health care shall not be abridged.
And no government mandate will ever force a person to contribute to a 'private' corporation for any reason, however well intentioned.
2. Every child shall have a right to quality education
And every parent shall have the right to keep their child out of a torturous indoctrination center masquerading as a school (Google John Taylor Gatto).
3. The right of workers to form unions shall not be infringed
Yes.
4. Every person shall have a right to affordable housing
Every person shall have the birthright to land and shall not be restricted by covenants from constructing whatever housing they can afford and desire provided it does not create a danger to others (Earth-ship houses are cheap and energy efficient). No tax shall ever be applied to one's primary residence on that land for any reason however well intentioned.
5. No business having operations within the US shall terminate a worker's employment for the purpose of obtaining cheaper labor elsewhere
A tariff shall be applied to any imported product equaling the difference in labor costs as compared to the manufacture of the product in the USA at the Prevailing Wage for that labor. (This puts the 'regulator' at the border instead of in the small business office.)

Is one of the reasons a strong puplic option on a national level is needed.
And no government mandate will ever force a person to contribute to a 'private' corporation for any reason, however well intentioned.
Mandatory health care without a public option is a mandatory tax for the reason of health care managed by 'for profit' private companies, but they take part of that 'tax' not for society but for the profit of shareholders and bonuses.

I'm still waiting for the government to bring back the 10th amendment, part of the Bill of Rights. I'm pretty sure we all just started to ignore it around the time Roosevelt was fixing the Great Depression. (not that that's a bad thing)

5. People's view of rights really does feel like mere permissions sometimes, doesn't it? (nt) |

6. Uh-huh. So what do you think about Texas Gov. Perry's threat to use the 10th Amendment as a weapon? |
|
You know, how Gov. Perry is talking about waving around the 10th Amendment and say that any federal health coverage plan doesn't apply to Texas, basically screwing millions of Texans?
It's usually the right-wing "states rats" crowd that likes to wave around the 10th Amendment.

10. Perry is an idiot, obviously |
|
I think the 10th amendment is flawed; using its reasoning, even the US Postal Service would probably be unconstitutional. Perry appealing to the 10th amendment may be constitutionally valid, but it is not ethically valid. I can't see why he would ever want to refuse so much money, especially if a significant portion of it would go towards helping some of the most vulnerable in society, the unemployed.

8. Excellent addition to the current Bill of Rights |
|
I think the only thing I would add to that list of yours is:
1: The right of the people to be masters of their own bodies and consume the intoxicant of their choice shall not be infringed.
:)
