When you read my posts 90% of the time I'm smiling. In my head I'm Lewis Black. I think that is one thing Liberals don't do enough is laugh and smile.

We need to smile even when we discuss tough issues such as race, gender, religion and sexual orientation.

I consider myself a gay man trapped in a woman's body, so I take the fight with my GLBT bruvas and sistahs seriously.

My brother, is in a mixed marriage, and all my nieces and nephews are mixed.

I've dated Muslims, Jews, Christians, Buddhists, black, white, asian...

I say what I think...I'm human, I'm not as crisp and professional as some of you. But my POV is this is the web. I'm not writing to get hired by the NYT, I'm writing as if I'm talking to you as if you were sitting next to me.

What you see/read is what you get. I am not going to try to convince any of you that I'm a black woman. You don't believe it TOUGH no skin off my ass.

What I say may piss you off but I'm willing to talk about it..and discuss it and If I'm wrong or if you convince me that you're right I'll agree.

This is the web, it is a community, it isn't American Idol for Bloggers. Just like any community we'll have scuffles but for god sake when an election comes vote democratic.

I'm 46, currently live in Ohio but I'm moving soon to Natick MA. I am a straight atheist male with one cat, the most evil Animal (thats her name.. after the muppet):



I have been unemployed for over a year now. A few weeks after I was laid off by the state of Ohio, I had a fire and lost everything. I've spent the last year fighting with the insurance company trying to get my money to begin replacing my stuff as well as looking for a job... so far, no luck with either.

My brother is gay, he is also one of my heroes. He came out after he finished high school in '78 with the full support of friends and family. He endured the fear and hatred, even stood up to it as the AIDS crises became simply insane through the late 70's and well into the 80's (In and around NYC). In '82 he met a wonderful man that he has been with ever since. In '86 he married a woman from Mexico so she could stay in the country and is still married to her today. The three of them have formed a very nice life and are all very happy. I wish I got to see them all more often then at holidays but such is adult life as we all live our own. He became a paramedic across the river in NYC and was a first responder on 9/11. Today, He, his partner and his wife all live in Florida. Through all of the things he has been through and done, I always see him with a smile... a quick quip, regardless of topic, that can make anyone laugh... just doing what needs to be done and still maintaining a sense of humor about everything.

I've always wished I could do the same... I try... I just have such a vulgar mouth :D

It sometimes seems I have worked my entire life towards equal rights for all... other times it feels like I should be doing more... I do try though.

over the whole Gates thing. I meant to stir it up because race in my eyes was not the primary issue. After talking with friends and family over the weekend we came to the conclusion...separately and together that class was the bigger issue where the Gates thing was concerned.

I don't believe that cop was racist he was an asshole who shouldn't have arrested a brotha. But after I heard that Lawrence O'Donnell also got arrested in Boston and that he sued and won! I knew that it was a much larger issue in the Boston area and class had to be it.

I remember the riots and violence in 1975 in Boston over school desegregation. Here's a good link for a summary: http://www.teachersdomain.org/resource/iml04.soc.ush.civil.boston/. Since then, regardless of Boston's liberal reputation, I've thought of Boston as something less than a liberal paradise. I spent a few days there in 2004 at the DNC and didn't notice anything unusual or glaring. I visited Harvard when I was in Boston and didn't see anything amiss.

But I do know, as a white man that's lived in the South his entire life that racist sentiment doesn't really go away with white people unless something significant and personal changes their mind. The almost 35 years that has gone by since the violence over school desegregation in Boston really doesn't mean anything. Racism is like HIV being treated by retrovirus drugs. It goes away and hides while it's under attack. It's still there, alive and well but just hiding. It's waiting for the coast to be clear to reemerge safely. In the meantime the host heals but is not safe. So in a lot of ways I just think by default that incidents like Gate's arrest really are racism that thought it was safe to come out.

OTOH, I read about how, to the person, the people that were in the bar when Obama called Crowley were thrilled that Obama called. They all seemed to say that Crowley was a good guy. So I don't know.

I completely understand why Gates would be so upset to the point of feeling like he was being treated by a white cop like a Black man caught burglarizing a house. Especially after he showed his ID inside his own house showing who he was and that was his address. At that point the cop should have said, "So sorry to have bothered you, sir. We just had to check out the call we got. I'm glad it was only you, the owner of the house that was here and not a burglary in progress. Have a good day, sir and I'm sorry for the inconvenience." and left. THAT would have immediately diffused any feelings Gates had about the situation. Crowley should have understood Gates' frustration and not let him "get under his skin" which is really what happened. It became a testosterone thing. (Testosterone should be a controlled substance, but that's for another post).

So then I lean toward the asshole cop theory rather than racist cop. One thing I do know for a fact is that most cops are criminals with a badge. Many aren't, but they're a minority. It appears Crowley falls in with the majority.

People would be very wise to listen to a Black woman because ain't nobody going to tell you the truth like a Black woman. They talk about Sotomayor's experience as a Hispanic woman. Not even a Hispanic woman experiences what a Black woman does (and I grew up in a heavily Hispanic area so I know what I'm talking about here.) 153. OMG I just read a story over on Gizmodo about mice and a spinal

injury break through.

They were talking about how they broke the mice back and then used this chemical and in a few weeks the mice could walk.

Grr. I almost cried at them breaking the mice back. I know it helps humans but there has to be a better way. I couldn't do what they do and sleep at night.
Even though it may benefit me I couldn't accept it knowing how many mice they had to do that too. And do they use pain meds on the mice?
