How will we know that Racism is dead?
Some say that racism is alive and well and as prevalent as ever. Some say that racism is around but not as prevalent. How will we know when racism has diminished to a point that people of color will get the same treatment as whits by the majority of persons.

1. Look at the calender.
When the millennium starts with a 3 instead of a 2 we might be half way there.

People of color will never be treated the same as whites?

4. I do believe it's wired in to our scared little brains.
As long as we think there's an "other," we'll be afraid of it.

10. There are all kinds of things wired in our brains
but ethics has evolved to deal with them. We are not condemned to live with racism forever.

Just the changes that have happened in my lifetime convince me of that.

13. Someone, somewhere will
find some fear to exploit and the "other" will always be an easy target to exploit.

The exploiters will always find some difference to define "the other" for those inclined to blame others for their plight.

16. But only white racism is institutionalized here.
Someone being racist to me won't stop me from getting a loan, buying a car or a house, etc.

24. More binary thinking
Institutionalized is not the only method that should be considered. A better approach is if in a locality does the local group in power discriminate against other groups by race. For example, oriental racism, against anyone not in their subgroup. Its more common than you think.

But then people will still want to kill each other for their religious differences, so it won't really make any difference.

31. Yep
North America is a majority non-white continent. More and more whites are marrying Latinos and blacks and asians. I suppose that it will only really end when enough non-whites have accumulated enough actual wealth and power to affect the system. Hell, even the Bushes have non-white members of their family.

26. My honest answer, in about 40 years...
... American racism will largely be a thing of the past. By then, most of the people that lived through the struggle for integration and the civil rights movement will be dead. There is a huge difference in how that generation and later generations view race. When they are gone, there won't be anyone around to remember a time when integration wasn't the norm, or that haven't lived their whole life along side people of other races.

I work with kids, and it is amazing to see how their attitudes about race differ from those of people even 10 years older. The idea of race barely even occurs to them.

27. Racism is here to stay
IMO

along with a whole host of other "isms"

Because we're human beings and that's just the way it is.

Some group or another always has to feel it's superior to another group. I mean, just look at DU for an example. Don't most of us here feel we're somehow smarter...more moral....BETTER....than the "morans" at, say, FR?

28. There will always be a "reason" to hate each other.
Be it race, sex, tribe, religion, politics, sports team, orientation, etc. etc.

Sadly, it's part of the human condition.

It's really a two way street, and the realization of change will have to be universal.

32. Eventually, we'll carry it over to sentient machines, then aliens, and then Humans again
returning in new forms from the seas and space.

But on the good side the bulk of the traditional stuff will be gone in a century, for the most part. Between assimilation and different and bigger fish to fry I think we'll see a gradual but substantial reduction.

Systemic institutionalised racism as it once existed in the West is pretty much finished. But many groups align wth their fellow blacks, whites, hispanics, arabs, whatever.
